When out yesterday filling feeders, I noticed that my metal barrelled feeders had lots of these black bug mites with quite a bit of corn dust, presumably from them. My question is does the heat cause these and how do you get rid of them?

Brown bugs is what I called them. I think they are in the grain beetle family.

You may have bought contaminated feed. Grain beetle are very common. Does the corn have holes in the kernels?

I didn't notice any holes or apparent contamination.

With brown bugs the corn will turn to dust or powder.

Clean out your feeder, I have even had to wash it out sometimes to get the stuff stuck on the sides. Make sure there are no weevels left before you put in new corn. When you open a new sack of corn look and see if there is any dust. If so take it back. I have put some diatomacious earth in with some corn that had weevels and it seemed to help.

X2

2 lbs of food grade diatomaceous earth per 100 lbs of corn.

When I buy corn I take a white 5 gal bucket with me, open a bag and dump a couple gallons of corn in the bucket and inspect it.

If there are bugs dust or cob web looking stuff in it they keep their crappy corn, I keep my money and go somewhere else to buy decent corn.

Doesn't seem to bother the deer!

I got two 55 gallon drums of corn from a farmer in Kansas last year that had weevils in it (got it for free!). I put a small bag of sevin dust in each barrel and put the barrels next to my feeders. Every couple weeks I would take corn out of the bug barrels and put it into my feeder. Never had a problem with the deer eating the corn. The coons didn't mind either!

Be sure and do not get the D.E. that is for swimming pool filters or you could be hacking up blood. Any feedstore would more than likely have the insecticidal D.E.
Outstanding idea Don K.

Get enough corn weevils sacked and you can hear the weevils eating it up if you listen closely. I have seen them make flour out of a grain cart full of corn in less than 4 weeks.

really good information. its now 7/20/2017. almost 5 years to the date of this post. I was curios about putting cedar chips in a sock and hanging it in the feeder. Have you guys done anything like this before?
