I have a possible opportunity to get on a deer lease out in Coleman. I've never hunted there or anywhere around there. I'll be rifle hunting, with a corn feeder and protein feeder. What kind of deer population is out there? How big of bucks can I expect on average? Just looking for a general answer. I know a lot of it has to do with land and buck management. As far as I know the land I'll be looking at hasn't been hunted in years. Any info is greatly appreciated!

All depends on what side of coleman co, as well as how big your lease is and the surrounding ranches. I am on 300 and we see deer every hunt but not that many mature ones.

It ALL depends on the property. But Coleman as a whole is good.

I've never hunted there but have seen numerous big deer that came from there. Highest densities will probably be south near the Colorado... I say go for it,especially if it hasn't been hunted in years. Good luck.

Depends on the area.. We used to be on one south of Coleman. The 1st 5 or 6 years had very good deer on it.. Then the L/O across the river started operating day hunts on the place. Then the L/O to our east started doing the same thing.. Still had a great number of deer, but the mature bucks were no were to be found. My dad this past year only saw a few 6 point bucks, along with some immature 8's and 10's. This place was 3,000 acres that we had for about 19 years.. We found out after the season was over that the L/O to the east thru his day hunting operation had killed roughly 200 deer..
But Cityslickerhunter is right Coleman County has a whole has a great population of deer.. It is nothing to go out for a afternoon hunt and have 20 to 30 deer hit the feeder..

Both of these were taken on my place in Coleman County this year. Not South Texas but if the place hasn't been shot out it's promising, especially if you invest in some protein.

Thanks! I called the 10 up with a rattle bag and took him clean on a fast run at 125 yds. I was pretty proud of myself. We watched the 8 for a month and finally decided to take him after seeing a few more up and comers.

I've seen plenty of BIG bucks come out of west Coleman. If you dont lease it, hook a brutha up!! Id love to have a place in Coleman. Weve hunted in Ballinger for 10+ years.
I have to wear sunglasses into the woods, because the deer would recognize me, an just surrender with their hooves up.

Two pretty serious deer hunters at work and my daughters grandpa all have hunted Coleman for years. All of them hunt different areas of Coleman and have pretty similar results. Lots of deer and mature bucks are going to typically be in the 130" range. One of them actually shot a huge 140" 7pt a few years ago. A little management and protein will go a long way from what I know of the area
A mature buck might be a deer, but you can bet it's a totally different animal
