Mule Deer lease I hunt on is the 17 day season only. No quail or doves or turkey or exotics or whitetail (rare to see any on the lease at all) just Mule Deer, hogs and predators. We might make a single trip out before the season, but I have only been out one time in the previous 8 yrs. We have no feeders and food sources change so much from year to year with rainfall or after a freeze that it does not help that much from what I have seen.

What can/does happen whether true or not, there is a sense that the frequent hunter is overstaying his/her welcome and having a full run of the property and dibs on the deer. This one along with non-community stands and overzealous dictation of deer harvesting requirements have been the demise of more lease arrangements that I've personally been associated with or directly heard of. Key to this is to have the hunter group and rancher in full and complete agreement on what are the expected and acceptable amounts of time to be out there.

I do most or all of the work in the offseason, the others never can make it for a work trip but somehow manage to make it during hunting season just as much or more than I can. I don't complain about doing the work because I enjoy it and I know its done right especially with the stands (ours are community). The truth is there isn't a such thing as the perfect lease and you have to eat some crow every once in a while to make things work, I just made up my mind not take things personal and not to wear my heart on my sleeve.

I can sort of see a lot of guys concerns with hunters having their own spots opposed to first come first serve. My FIL and a few hunters went up to the ranch last weekend to fill up their feeders, but I told them don't worry about mine. He wanted to swap my SD card (I'm the only one with a camera set-up so far) and top off my feeders, but I kindly rejected. I'm sort protective of my spot and I feel I'm responsible for taking care of it.

I like a mixture of community and having your own spots. Hunter density should be low enough to have both.

Yall like stout coffee?
Where would yall like me to go in the morning? You sure that's not too close to where you'll be?

I'm the guest, I do as I'm told. Will quit hunting to go help track and/or load a deer. Will help skin and quarter someone elses deer. Will cook and clean.

The only statement I make is "I really hate letting hogs and coyotes walk." Yall good with me killing everyone I see? And by the way I can reach pretty far so, is anybody down range in these directions?

I think it is the entitlment mentality some people have that gets them in trouble. I show up to someone elses land to hunt as a guest, I'm just glad to be there and appreciate the invite.

You sound like my kind of guest

What I like about retirement is that I can hunt during the week with my also retired buddy. We have the whole lease alone. It's really kinda neat.

a good guest should ask:

What time do you want me there?
Show up with steaks, good beer and a bottle of something good.
Open the gates.
Offer to cook, clean, help clean a deer, whatever..
Be OK with whatever the plan is.
Zero complaining.

That's how I do it as a guest and how my son's are being taught.

I'm 29, Ccoker, that's how I was raised. As a guest I've always gone along with whatever!
