Guys, lets dispense with the nonsense and "I heard..." BS.
There's a process. First, any weapon seized is evidence of a crime and must be maintained as such until the case is finally resolved. Then it's up to the judge, based upon the prosecuting attorney's suggestions. Each case is different, with a different disposition.
In some cases the guns are ordered returned to the owners. In some cases the guns are awarded to the state (arresting agency and prosecutor) or just the arresting agency. In some of those instances the guns are traded for equipment for LE. In other cases the guns are auctioned to FFL holders. In yet other cases the guns are destroyed.
It really is a case by case basis and there's no blanket policy on the matter. This is 100% correct. It is also a good idea to become friends with local law enforcement official responsible for sale or destruction. It can pay dividends.
