B. Why would you take a head shot on a nice buck? If you had made a good shot and killed it, there would be nothing to mount...

What you did was just silly and unethical

If you feel that you must keep taking shots at deer that do not present a good shot at the vitals, a neck shot is a MUCH higher percentage shot than a head shot, for exactly the situation that happened to you... The head moves a lot

I know I am seeing the error of my choice, but you know what they say about hindsight... I just figured I'd rather have him dead and let the taxidermists figure out the mess than have him get away because I didnt shoot

As a hunter... let me rephrase that As a good/ethical hunter you have to be responsible and take responsibility for things you do. It was a bad choice. It does and has happened to many. Here is the good part, it is a learning experience, try not to make the same mistake twice. Take the time to sit out from hunting to become informed and capable with your rifle and know both the limitations of it and yourself. Go to a gun range and burn a couple boxes of shells dont shoot as fast as you can, take your time. If the second shot doesnt go reasonably close to the one before it then there is something wrong with the setup of the weapon, your form or you need more practice time.

Until you are proficient enough to kill cleanly dont shoot at another deer... even if it is gonna leave!

Sean, I sure hope you are posting this for entertainment reasons. If not and you really did this, you need to reconsider hunting. There is an ethical part to this sport, and no part of what you did was right. You don't shoot a freakin' buck in the head. And with an POS sks. You need to read up on hunting in general and where proper shot placement needs to go. There's a good chance you mauled the buck somewhere in the lower part of the head or jaw, due to sight off-set. (If the gun is sighted in at 100 yards, a 30 to 50 yard shot will hit low by at least an inch or two or more) And it's a low percentage shot with an inaccurate rifle. Hunters like you are the reason hunters get a bad wrap because of ignorant stuff like this.

Man I'm disgusted that you even tried this shot! Can't even imagine that your granddad allowed you to take this shot. Just shameful all around if you ask me. And like has already been mentioned your not a hunter!

45 minutes?? Really?? Did ya go back and look later, or just call it quits after the 45 minutes of looking?

I can put 3 shots on a quarter at 100 with my 30-06. I can put 3 shots on a softball at BEST at 50 yards with an SKS. These guns are not reliable or accurate enough to make an ethical headshot. Hopefully you learned from this experience. I have taken two head shots in my life, and both have been finishing shots on wounded deer at under 50 yards. I keep it to heart/lung shots or else I'll just pass.

It seems to me that you are a young inexperienced hunter. I feel there is no reason for any of us to bash this kid but rather us this as an opportunity to teach him. You made a terrible mistake and need to listen to what info some of these men are telling you and learn what the right thing to do is next time. All the bashing really needs to be directed at grandpa for allowing this shot at all and not putting forth more effort in finding the deer instead of hurrying home to fill his belly!!!

Were you in a hurry? Why did you choose to try a head shot if you couldve waited it out and potentially had a better shot later on. Not a smart decision. But, at least you learned. Also, why would you just throw another couple of rounds at it hoping to hit it? Not a responsible decision either. Sounds like you need to learn patience, and some more trigger time with a rifle worthy of the cause.

This gets my vote for most idiotic post of the month. I dont know who taught you about rifles and hunting, but they obviously dont know much either.

You owe the animal the respect of being ethical and ensuring a swift, painless death. Apparently this lesson hasn't been passed on to you yet. I hope you've learned from this horrible experience and never repeat such an awful disrespect of one of God's creatures.

The fact that you only spent 45 minutes looking for your deer only rubs salt in the wound.

Ethical deer hunting is alot different than X-box games Sniper (btw, bad choice of names if your first post is how you missed a shot between 30-50 yards).
Have you taken your hunter safety course? there is a section on ethical shots and why not to do what you did. Also, buy or borrow a real rifle and leave your "bad a$$" assault rifle at home.
