A 15 year quest on this ranch and a 5 year association with this buck came to a conclusion Halloween night.I first noticed this buck as a 2.5 yr old. He had a tight 8 point frame, good tine length and big forks on his G2s. Oh and the front of his main beams looked like he had run into a parked car. He looked like the exact baby version of a buck my dad took back in 2002 in the same area of this ranch. I remember sitting in the stand that night thinking, well if he makes it and sticks around, Im going to take that buck when he is mature and dad and I will have matching bucks on the wall. Well he managed to keep all of the traits I described while adding some every year. With all of the rainfall last year I had decided to hunt for this buck exclusively as he was 5.5 years old. I never saw him until Jan 9th. By then his rack was busted up bad but what was left was exceptional. Fast forward to this year. I get my first photos of the deer in late August and my jaw hit the keyboard on my laptop. Thing was, he never stuck around for than 1 minute ever. Basically just cruising through only capturing 1 or 2 pics at a time. By late Sept. he was showing every night and low and behold my second daytime pic on Sept 30th. Im thinking to myself, Im going to whack him opening day of bow season. I hunt opening day and dont even see a deer. I kept hunting and waiting through the month, all those 90+ degree days and with lots of anticipation on the cooler days, seeing only does and 1.5 yr old bucks. Around the the 3rd week of Oct I'm beginning to worry that Im hunting a dead deer as I havent gotten a pic of him since that one on Sept. 30. I continue on. On Monday morning, I tell my wife Im making the 2 hr drive back to the ranch to hunt that evening and if unsuccessful I would be back late that night. She tells me Im crazy and "ate up with it". I laugh and agree and head out the door. I settle into my blind as it is starting to cool off that evening and notice the deer are moving earlier than they had been. I am also seeing more deer than normal and have 3 mature bucks out as well. It is starting to get late and I peek out of my blind and low and behold I see a big buck. I raise my binoculars and immediately recognize the browtines. I grab my bow and ready my arrow. He comes straight in and is broadside. I draw back and as I do, a doe moves between me and him. Now I have to decide whether to let off the draw or wait it out. Im afraid to let off the draw. I lower my string hand to the front of my shoulder. This buys me the time I need. After about 3 minutes everything comes together and I let it fly. Perfect. He piles up about 100 yards out. I have rough scored him but Ill let some guess should they choose. I personally dont care about the score. This one means an awful lot to me. 6.5 years old and my biggest by bow by far. Oh and before it comes up this is free range. No high fences for me.

Man what a deer. The story behind it makes it a trophy in itself. Congrats on your trophy!
