A good friend of mine told me yesterday that his large German Shepard had his left rear leg mauled so bad that the vet had to amputate. The vet has treated enough critters with wounds that he believed it was a big cat based on the claw marks.

I've called for Coyotes and Bobcats with pretty good sucess but have never called in a big cat. Are there any different tactics to employ?

I don't know if its a cat or not, a neighbor of mine thought he had vicious cats around because three of his German Shepherds were banged up pretty bad, but it was my wolf hybrid they attacked in my yard and got what they deserved. Little Pee Wee got banged up pretty bad too, but not as much as the shepherds.

For what it's worth there is suppose to be a cougar lurking around where I live. A few neighbors have seen it early in the morning or late in the evening. I have not seen it personally and to be honest I was very skeptical about a cougar being our area.

My neighbor swears he saw it so I decided to contact the GW to see what we could do and not do. GW said that they are very shy and elusive creatures. Consider yourself lucky if you ever get the oportunity to see one in the wild but they are and do roam this part of the country. I asked what we could do since many of the neighbors have pets. Most likely they will not come by where people are but they have been known to make a meal out of pets. I asked if he could set a trap and he said that traps will not work on a big cat. They are to smart and to shy to get near a trap.

GW said bottom line is they have huge territories and most likely they will move on in a few weeks. I did ask if I saw it could I kill it and he said as long as I have a valid hunting license I could. They are not protected but the chances of me killing it would be pretty slim. If I were to get a chance to kill it I would need to contact the GW so he can take a look and make a record of it. Hope my info helps you out some. Have a great day!!!

Trying to call in coyotes the other night ended up calling in this male:

Called in with a rabbit and with a rabbit decoy. They must hunt with their partner because we could hear another (guessing female) in the tree line.

Greetings,
I believe big cats are around but also know Great Pyrenees will mess most other dogs, coyotes, wolves, etc. up. if the come near the herd they are protecting.
If a Great Pyrenees does get a hold of them, they usually don't come home though.

Greetings,
I called a Mountain Lion up one night years ago.
Cured my urge for night calling for quite a few years....
That was only one time out of quite a few nights spent out there.

Bobcats seem to lose a lot of their caution when coming into a call - I've had quite a few get up close and personal.
Had one bobcat come up to the side of the pickup and was about ready to jump in with us when I spotted him by accident and reaction shot with the shotgun and 00 buck. Hit him with one pellet just before he jumped.
It would have been pretty exciting if he had of jumped in the truck bed with us!

Cheers,

I raise goats in Fannin County, and about every 6 months or so, we have a big cat that comes by for a few days and takes a few goats. I have only caught sight of it once.

We also raise Great Pyrenees dogs, and they do a GREAT job keeping coyotes away, but not with this big cat.

Would love ideas on how I can get rid of this cat.
