Just got notice that I drew for the February 8-10 aoudad hunt at Palo Duro canyon (included my hunting partner, oldest son, and another good hunting friend). Anyone hunted this area before that would be willing to share a little info, especially lodging-restaurants-etc.... I know as soon as I return the fees, I'll get all the info from the Dept. but I can't wait that long to start thinking about coming back down to Texas. I do love getting out of the snow country for some fun hunting. Oh yeah, I had about 10 points in order to draw.

Hunting Palo Duro Canyon is much like hunting the Missouri Breaks in Idaho. Find several high spots where you can glass and use your eyes more than your legs. Aoudad are wary animals and not easy to hunt. Palo Duro Canyon is very rough country in places but its a great hunting experience. Congrats on your draw. OBTW you may not be hunting out of the snow. It can get very cold and nasty in the Texas panhandle in Feb. Later, Baker

"...the Missouri Breaks in Idaho..."? Montana perhaps?

You are correct , that's what happens when I'm trying to do several things at once. The point is still correct, Stay on top and glass.

Yeah, I caught that but knew what he meant tho, as I really like getting high and glassing for any animals. Love Coues deer hunting down south if we can get tags. Looking forward to this trip, as I have only seen aoudad in some small HF places in the past, and I've never shot one. Gonna leave the SCI convention in Las Vegas and we'll all drive over for the hunt. Should be an excellent time with family and friends, and I appreciate the input.

I have a Booner Aoudad from the Palo Duro Canyon. Depending on where at in the canyon your hunting, means alot. The southern parts through the JA is really brushy, quick shots. I can tell you this there is some monsters in there if you put in the time. Good luck

Blank.. Our ranch borders Palo Duro State Park. You might even go through our place to get to your hunt area. I'll PM you my phone number in case you want to chat. Closest town is Canyon. Canyon only has two decent hotels.... the Best Western and the Holiday Inn Express. Feldman's Dinner is the best place to get a good "home cooked" meal in Canyon (great chicken fry). Pepito's is good Mexican Food, and Fat Boy's is decent BBQ. Other than that it's fast food or driving an extra 20 minutes into Amarillo.

Best of luck. They got some good sheep in the canyon if you can find them.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

My best advice is to not get discouraged. We have a ranch on the rim of the canyon and sometimes you can hunt hard for 3-4 days and not see one. Other times you'll see 20+ rams on a 3-4 day hunt.

There are some monsters for sure. I have seen several over 30" in my 20+ years of hunting them. Seen a few that would probably be world records but couldn't ever get close enough for a shot.

Good luck, and make sure you take some good binoculars for glassing.

We got drawn for the 1/14-1/15 Youth hunt and we are excited about the hunt also. We are looking for info too and we plan a trip during the Christmas holidays to camp and scout. Any help would be appreciated! We live in Wichita Falls.
