HoofHunter at Pecan Crossing Ranch had some, and when I was there his plan was to raise and sell them. Not sure if he has any now or not

Ever wonder why you don't see a lot of Ibex like you do the other exotics? I don't know what it is , but they are hard to raise. This year I had 19 kids born and as of this morning I have 12 still alive. They are in a 10 acre trap and I check them everyday. If they were out in the larger pasture I am sure there would be a lot less alive. I have 3 nannies in a 75 acre pasture and have not raised a kid there in 2 years. This year I had about 6 females that did not breed. The last nanny to kid did so 4 days ago. This morning I did not see the kid. keep looking and finally found it. Its eyes were mattered shut. I caught it and took it to the house and soaked them in warm water until I could get them open. Then took her back to her mother. If I had not found it there would be another dead in a couple of days.

I have pulled 2 kids so far and have them on the bottle. The last one was pulled yesterday and she had her eyes matted as well and was able to loosen the dirt. I have come to the conclusion that it is best to bottle raise the weaker ones and improve my mortality rate on them. So far I have had 21 kids and lost 2, pulled 2 for the bottle.

We had ten and lost five and the owner decided to bottle feed the rest and not take any chances. Coulpe of them looked like they had been horned and we saw a mother throw one five feet in the air. not sure about why they die but in the short time i saw them thier life didnt look to easy.

INTERESTING thread guys. Makes you wonder how these things survive in the wild in their native habitat at all. Do the mothers tend to be alot more nurturing in the wild? Hell, it sounds like these Texas animals would throw the kid 5' in the air and be half way accross the pasture before it landed if they saw a coyote or cougar! Earl

Earl It is not their mothers that throw their kids, it is the other females. They don't like it when another kid gets close to them and especially when they are eating. It is all a learning process. the kids learn to stay away from the other nannies. After a couple of weeks the kids start staying together except when they want to nurse. As for surviving in the wild, not a whole lot do. If they make it for about a month they have a pretty good chance of living. There is a good post on utube of a fox trying to catch an Ibex kid. It is amazing how they can climb and jump. How's it going Earl. Doing any hunting lately?

My latest count is 27 born, 2 dead and 2 on the bottle. I have a third with a very matted eye and tried to catch it today (unsuccessfully). I still have 6-8 nannies who have not had any yet, but they look like they could pop at any minute. Don - How is your count now?

You are doing a lot better than me. 19 born and 12 alive. last year I had 21 born and only lost 3. Plus this year I had several that did not breed even though I had the billy in with them for 2 months. I don't know if it was the weather or what. The nannies were all in good shape and I had not changed their feed. Glad you did well with them this year and I would like to see some pictures when you get a chance. Came through Lampasses about a week ago and it looks pretty dry around there too.

For what it is worth, you would be better off going to Raz in harper and buying some hybrid nannies than crossing it with pygmy goats. the offspring are not worth anything. Just an opinion and a little advice. He looks like he has a lot of Persian in him, so I would stick with that route and find me some Persian nannies.

I had a neighbor that wanted one of his Boer goats bred to an Ibex. The offspring looked like a Boer goat with ears that went straight up. I think Steven is right, if your going to raise something you might as well try to make some money out of it. At Raz sometimes you can pick up some young male and female Ibex crosses pretty cheap. You can usually tell how a young goats horns are going to look. If they are going straight back they will usually continue to do so. If they are already going out he will probably be more like a Spanish type goat.

I was thinking that Pygmy's would stay in a low fence better. I also hear they are good mothers. (and good eating) The little Ibex is going to be a pet. My boys almost have him in their pocket already.lol I will experiment with different crosses and hopefully come up with "HL Hybrid Ibex"
I was thinking of heading to Bandera. I hear there are some fine nannies down there.lol

Persian, he has the black collar. He might have a 1/32 or higher Spanish Goat in him. This is based on the slight flare in the horns, but I cannot be sure based on the picture.

He is most likely a hybrid, but he definitely has a lot of Persian in him. You can usually tell a Persian by the dark shoulders and the somewhat thin, blade-like horns (which will have less noticeable knots than other species).

Dustin, I don't have any right now, but we would get $1200 to $1500 for them. They are not a bad looking hybrid. The 3/4 ibex with a 1/4 pygmy really looks good.

Don are all yours in a 8 ft fence? No actually all the nannies and the kids are partly in a little over 6' fence and part of it is only 5' cattle panels. I probably have the least wild Ibex in the country.

Had to laugh. I see you have custom bars in the front window. I do too.Nice billies. Thanks, the bars may be bent now I hear them either beating each other or the trailer up. Better get on the road so they settle down. I got a email yesterday afternoon that they wanted the billies. Got the trailer and took it out to the feeder. The goats are in about a 300 acre pasture. jacked it up as high as as I could get it in front. Put corn in the trailer. Tied a rope to the back sliding door. In the mean time the goats had found me. The 2 I wanted went into the trailer and I pulled the gate shut.I need to go buy a lottery ticket. It never works out this easy.

Molly is a Nubian cross. Her colors make her really "goaty". She has been bred with a pure Nubian. I think they will be alot of fun. We almost have them eating out of our hand. The pygmies are more skiddish than the Ibex.

I could have bought the big Alpine in the second picture live for $17,500, but instead they sold the hunt for $25,000. He is on the wall in New Jersey or Pennsylvania. I heard the same guy shot the Siberian in the other picture for $50,000. Do not know if it is true, but highly likely.
Average market prices are as follows:
Alpines males & females $4,500 and up Siberian males & females $5,000 and up Nubian males & females $2,500 and up Persian (pure) males & females $1,500 and up Hybrid males $750+, females $250+

The Billy is from my pen with the pure Nubians in it. The nanny shown is a pure Nubian but the sunlight has distorted her color.
