I wanted to give the dogs some work and have fun with the family in the field. So we did a put and take hunt. My daughter Lauren and the kids adopted grandpa Gary hunted over Cash first. Gary's eyes aren't what they used to be and this was Lauren's 1st quail hunt.
Lauren before the hunt.

Not a pretty point by Cash but a dead stop and hold point from a full run.
The first 3 finds Cash held steady to the flush. Lauren and Gary missed the birds.

This pic is one of Cash's last points before I switch him out with June. I could tell he was starting to get tired.

June really surprised me. She hunted the singles that Lauren and Gary missed earlier. She didn't bump or bust any of the birds, and they started hitting the birds.

June in the field with Gary.

Cash after his rest. This one is a cripple I sent him to after he retrieved the closer bird, and he's not going to move if it won't fly.

He seemed determined to not let June out do him. I think she may have a better nose than him and he backed her on some of the finds.

It was a fun day. I learned not to put my son in charge of the camera. To many pictures with half a dog or person. That as much as I run my dogs they still need to be in better shape. AS soon as we walked back to the Suburban June crashed in the back seat.

Looks like a fun time. Nice pictures. And in your son's defense - it's not easy taking the pictures - I'm horrible at it.

He got in trouble this week.
So for part of his punishment he got to help me put birds in the field and man the camera.
The soft side of me came out and I did let him hunt the last few birds.

Looks as if a lot of people will be going to this type of hunting this year. Have you noticed that there is not a wild quail hunt story on the first two pages of this forum.

A NSTRA friend named Jason Allen got on a lease up near Guthrie two years ago. He had never shot a wild quail. Guess what? He's still never shot a wild quail. What are the regulations about buying and shooting your own quail during quail season? I think you have to stay within the limits. I don't know of any other rules, or laws.

That really suprises me! My family owns some land in between Guthrie and Paducah, we busted 4 good covies last year off of just a 55 acre pasture. Didnt even hunt the other 250+ acres. They are wild birds in the area!

I need to look at all the rules for banded quail. Wouldn't it be nice hunt most of the year with no limits.
