If i remember correctly. hogs lack the reflective material in the back of their retnas that absorbe light. Most animals see well at night because they have this material.. I know and IR beam will show their eyes more then regual light..

I know with my IR game cams, the deer eye glow nicely but the pigs do BARELY. Everytime we spotlight for pigs, its more their shape no the eye shine.

Hogs do not like the lights. If they see any they tend to drop there head and run if the light is directed toward them. The only color i have ever seen out of a pigs eye is an orangeish redish color but never the green like deer.

I hope your not shooting stuff based on eye color at night in a spot light. I went varmint hunting with a budy of mine last year(I had never hunted at night like that) he called and flshed the spotlight and said oh there is eyes get em... I looked through the scope and said you sure he siad yeah go ahead take the shot, I hesitated and didnt... boy am I glad, turned out to be a bunch of cattle. From there on I didnt shoot unless I could see what it was, ended the night with a couple of coons and a opossum, saw a bobcat for a flash, but not fast enough. It was his place and his cow and he said shoot, but I think it still would have created some bad blood.

Bob in texas is right, they wont reflect like a deer or predators eyes, yet with a bright enought light I have seen them reflect if you hit their eyes just rite. Also, it isnt a good idea to try to identify an animals eyes based soley on the color of the reflection. Every animals eyes will vary depending on the color and brightness of the light being shined at them. A good example is a bobcat. Shine a red spotlight at a cat, and their eyes will appear bright red or almost a orange at times. Hit the same cat with a bright white light, they will appear either blue or bright yellow. Using a dim white light will make them appear red or orange also. Their is no repeatable way to id an animal just by the color of their eyes. Different animals within the same species can also reflect more than others at times which will in turn also make there eyes appear to have a different color tone as well. Try shining a blue or a green like on any animal and see what color reflects back.It may suprise you! Take care Chris

Ive always heard that hogs eyes dont reflect light, but I see it all the time. Caught a good boar the other night and his eyes were as green as a deer's. So yes they do reflect light and its usually a greenish color

I have seen hog eyes reflect green, yellow fading to orange and light red. They definately will reflect under the right circumstances, not sure what those are, but it happens.

For what it is worth, here is some biology. Y'all can sort it out. They will certainly reflect some light if hit directly, but not anything compared to deer or predators.
"Most vertebrate animals (deer, horse, etc.) have a reflective layer behind the retina which when looking into a light reflects back like that of reflectors on bicycles and such. When your vehicle’s headlights shine into the eyes of a deer, the deer’s eyes reflect a luminous white glow which is very easily discernable. This tapetum lucidum reflection is what normally serves as a warning sign at night for those of us on the roadways. Where wild hogs are concerned, though, the normal does not fit. You see, wild hogs do NOT have that reflective layer behind the retina. So whether spotlighting on your land or just cruising along on your way home, you will not see wild hog eyes looking back at you even though they are there."
"A lot of the animals we see, especially the ones that go out at night, have a special, reflective surface right behind their retinas," says Dr. Cynthia Powell, a veterinary ophthalmologist at Colorado State University. That light-reflecting surface, called the tapetum lucidum, helps animals see better in the dark.
When light enters the eye, it's supposed to hit a photoreceptor that transmits the information to the brain, Powell explains. But sometimes the light doesn't hit the photoreceptor, so the tapetum lucidum acts as a mirror to bounce it back for a second chance.
A large number of animals have the tapetum lucidum, including deer, dogs, cats, cattle, horses and ferrets. Humans don't, and neither do some other primates. Squirrels, kangaroos and pigs don't have the tapeta, either.

I've had feeder cam pictures where there is some reflection, not bright like a deer or coon though.

I was running a large, rechargeable red lense spotlight at 230am last Friday morning.
Saw 4 red eyeballs in a wallow staring at me at 80 to 100 yards. Tried to photo so I could show the internet that wild feral hogs spawned directly from Satan and that each time you eradicated a wild feral hog you released that soul back to Satan. The hogs watched me try to get my camera out and then took off.
Waited a while and I had 8 red satanic eyeballs staring directly at me. Setup the AR15 223 on the hood and with left hand used red spotlight and with right hand tried to make shot with AR on bipod. I identified as hogs when one came out of wallow thru the 2x7 vortex with red light on hog.
50/50 I hit or missed. I had crosshairs directly on hog but was moving and I was shooting with one hand. I could have hit but was not kill shot and it took off. Did not hear a squeal but I double tapped because there were so many in the wallow.
I hear when you go spotlighting you need two people (1 for spotlight and one to gun).
Looks like I need to break down and buy an light to attach. j
I could have made this a shorter post by just typing, 'when I used a red spotlight my hogs had red eyes'.

Most animals eyes will reflect the same color tone being shined into them. Their eyes are nothing more than a refletor that will change with various color and brightness of individual spotlights. We run only white lights with dimmers for predators and the color of "every" animals eyes will change as we adjust the brightness of our lights. This includes coyotes, cats, fox, deer, hogs, and even cattle and horses. They will actualy go all the way from a red to a blue or yellow with the same light just due to the amount of power we send to the light. Just like Redchevy said, pulling the trigger based on eye color is not a good idea.

Put it this way... Don't count on going by eye reflection if you want hogs at night! The best way I've seen is to sweep your light and train yourself to recognize a dark lump or that 'something out of place' blob. The other thing about spotlighting pigs is that they usually have at least some mud and dirt on them (after all they like to wallow), which means that they will be very dull in the spotlight, sometimes that dullness will contrast with certain grasses around them and clue you in.
Like any other type of night hunting, hogs present their own unique challeneges! You'll have a blast though once you train your eye to see the shape and give up on eye reflections..

I could have made this a shorter post by just typing, 'when I used a red spotlight my hogs had red eyes'. u need to invest in a golight $300 and you can get the red lens covers for $7. Duke08 and I have aways used these to hog and varmint hunt.
