I am thinking about putting 12 volt winches on the crank up feeders. Anyone ever do this? Any problems?

Never used one but have seen a winch that instead of using the handle to crank it up and down you utilized a battery operated drill with socket to lift and lower. Looked pretty handy. Had video demo on web. Will try to locate.

Yes I have seen it done on a winch feeder the guy had a atv/utv and he would pull up and connect the positve to negative to lrt it dow and then connect the positive to positive to positive to raise it back up. I have installed one in the back of my Ranger to pull hogs in. I lower the taligate and use a 4-5' section of roller with a lip. I pull the wire rope out connect to the hog hook up my jump-N-carry and piggy come rollin in. Good luck

not to sure about leaving one out for sticking fingers to grab. i could see having a cable holding the barrel up with a hoop or two on the end that you could pull up with a winch and then secure it on a hook on the leg of the feeder.

This what I am thinking about using. I am wondering though, if the winch would actually hold up 600 pounds without slipping. Everything I am reading is saying a winch is not to be used as a hoist.

Do not use that, to big bulky. I have seen it done with a small 1000 or 1500 winch I have not done it. Since you are looking at Northern tool look at their brake winches that is what I use on all my winch feeders and they will hold a load in position without a doubt. I use these on all my winchfeeders they cost more than a boat winch and many of the popular Winch feeders company's say you don't need them. That is the good enough mentality and I don't subcribe to it.

Not that one but they have a worm gear one that one of my customers did use an 18 volt Dewalt on. The one that I sent you is the one that uses a handle and I put on my winch feeders. while I have not looked I am sure NT has one.

Worm gears are the ONLY way to get a drill to lift 400-500 pounds of corn.
You have to weld the nut and/or a socket to get it to lower and lift with the drill.

DCS, this might be where you saw the drill lifting the drum.

It is a DL Winch similar to the one I showed you but of course it is a worm gear.
Here is a link to the winch that I used for my customer. It is a very good winch, if you use this instead of welding the nut on just double nut it. I recall the it is a 1/2" nut thus a 3/4" socket.

If you are referring to the Hang Em Highs they are using a worm gear wich like this:


They welded two bolts on to it then welded a socket to the hand crank so you can still use it that way, or you use another socket on an 18v drill.

Bad news, I bought a 2000# modle that looks like the Grainger one,It did not come close to working. The drill could not pick up a 1/2 full barrel.Mine came from Harbor Freight............

I think you may have solved your problem when you said Harbor freight. Keep in mind they sell some things such as clamps and other things that are just fine but when it comes to things that are criticl such as this I am not interested or impressed. That is why I us the Dutton Lawson brake winch on my feeders.

You know what,I will just sell the 1 year old barrel feeder for $100.00 complete. Then buy something that is a no crank..........

I am certainly not a Harbor freight fan when it comes to stuff like this however with that said I am sure it is the gear ratio. Harbor Freight should give you your money back I think. What puzzles me the most is why give up on a winch feeder. Have you checkek the cables and pulleys? Most folks with a standard tripod feeder would give their eye teeth for a winch setup. Oh and by the way tell your son that without high expectation he would not have the life he does today: Potable water, freedom, color TV and the list goes on. If noting else you could turn it into a double pulley system. It still beats the heck out of crawling ladders.

I ALSO HAVE 4 REMINGTON FEEDERS I fill flat on the ground. Overall height might be 6 foot. I just dump the bags of corn in with no ladder or winch. just to ld for ladders. Yea,my son still has a few lessons yet to learn..........Thanks

I have used both types of winches - the hand crank/cordless drill type and the 12 volt winch type. I prefer the cordless drill.

This is the one with the Harbor Freight worm gear winch. I just leave the handle on the winch, but you have to pay attention...


This is the 55 gl drum feeder. Even though the low-end cordless drill will work, it drains the battery. I finally bought a Milwaukee 18V lithium and it cranks the winch just fine.
