Fun weekend- Thank you Texas Parks and Wildlife!
My son Garrett was drawn for a youth hunt this year on Devils River SNA Dan Allen Hughes Unit. roughly 25 miles north of Del Rio. This public land hunt took place on 17000 acres of rough canyon and steep terrain(my hammies are burning still). With limited time due to school and basketball we could only do half of the hunt period. Neither of us have ever hunted in terrain like this so it was scout and learn on the move. He did really well in going in and down and up the canyons. I found a spot to set up on 3 converging game trails with fresh scrapes and rubs. I set him a small pop up blind for early morning sits around this area and his buck came in to check the scrapes. We had a great time and our patience and persistence paid off. I think he should pay the guide handsomely! Enjoy the pics.

Memories made, heritage passed on, and a nice buck. Great job on the photo essay!

That’s one proud kid you got there and sounds like your one proud dad.
I was there on the hunt 12/8 thru 12/11. We had a great time even though we where not successful. Nice place to hunt and the staff were really friendly.

Did you see any animals and or exotics? I would like to put in for this place again. Did you notice any rutting activity while you were there?

No rutting. We saw the biggest bodied buck I hand ever seen. It looked like one of those Michigan or Ohio bucks. It was probably a 10 pt. But all the tines on the left main beam were knocked off. I did not have a shot, but my buddy did and he chose not to take it since it was the first deer we saw.
We did jump up two black buck antelopes, but they took off like lightning and could not get a shot......man are they fast. We saw one wt doe that we jumped.
Others on the hunt when we were there shot a fallow, a couple of audad and a 6 and 10 pt.

Did y’all see any exotics?

We had a great time. We stayed in Del Rio, which made for a long drive every day. I would love to hunt it again, in a heart beat. We hunted in compartment 5 which is the first one up front. The road going in was in real muddy due to the snow the night before we arrived. It was a great opportunity, where else could you hunt a place like that for the price?

If I got drawn again I would stay at the bed and breakfast near the place. We stayed at motel 6 del rio, too much driving. Where y’all stay?

The B&B .. was perfect and Marlene is very nice, made us feel at home. Drive was about 30 min to get into our compartment.
