Last year after buying my place in Lampasas County I created a monster. My Dad, who is now 71 wanted to take up deer hunting again at my urging after a very long hiatus that started in the 70's. He shot the first buck off my place last year on the rifle opener and has talked about this years season nonstop since. The management program I have decided to go off of has us shooting one management buck and one "trophy" mature buck each year. I shot a nice 8 point I would consider our management deer during bow season so I set my mind to getting my Dad the trophy for the year. I have had a lot of really good bucks coming in this year and had two in mind for him. I told him whichever one you see first you should try and get him. As luck would have it the bigger of the two was a no show Saturday although he had been around for 15 consecutive days. Cant say it broke my heart. He could use another year. But the other buck decided that Saturday afternoon he was going to push a doe right past my pops. He made the best of the encounter and put one in his lungs with the .270 and he only ran 25 yards before he dropped. his guy had it all. Age, chocolate horns, and a kicker. He also split his ear and broke a main beam tip over the last few days. I am very happy for my Dad. I would rather see him shoot my big deer any day than get them myself.

As Dad was in the process of shooting his deer I was across the ranch rattling on a hillside. I heard a leaf crack right behind me and I turned to find a rattlesnake sneaking up on my 6. I swatted at him with my shooting sticks after snapping a pic. He decided to strike at me which inevitably got him shot with my pistol. I guess that's what I get for sitting on a rocky hillside facing the sun right before dark. At least I will have a new hatband!

All in all I am afraid my Pops is setting the bar pretty high for me for next years opener!

John
