I think I've decided to go immediately to loading my own 6.5 grendel and skip the whole buying ammo step. Some questions: 1. I hear in general for gas guns, it's best to Full Length size your cases. Which makes since. So if i get a hornady FL die and I set it up to where it bottoms out completely when I raise the ram up, then does that mean I have Full Length sized the case? I assume to FL size is to make the shoulder as short the die can make it. 2. I already have CCI 400 small rifle primer and Ramshot TAC. Any issues in starting with these? 3. Found some brass on line. Looks like it's new. Any reasons why i should use something like this? I am trying to save a bit of money here. https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/i...brass-100-count4.Do i need to trim brand new cases or do anything else to them? Asked this question before about 308 Lapua brass and the answer was no. Does the same apply here for "lesser" brass?

1- Yes
2- Yes, they will work, but TAC is a little slow burning, depending on which bullet you plan to run. I'd prefer to run a magnum primer with that slow of a powder.
3- That will work
4- You should not need to trim new brass, just load and go.

At least buy one box of hornady factory ammo & a hornady headspace gauge set so you can have a few spent case's to set your resizing die up with the proper set back 3/4 thousands

Chad, thanks for the response as always.
FYI, planned on sticking to something around 120-123. Would ulitmately like a good soft point bullet in that range.

Those weight bullets would work. It will be a compressed load with TAC, but give it a whirl and see what shoots good.

Do you think Reloader 15 would be better? That and winchester 760 is all I have and I'd rather not buy a different powder.

I'd rather not buy a different powder. So you're not REAL serious about this project?

Trust me load about 27 gr of TAC with the 123gr ELD and you will be smiling.

Lots of powders will work in the Grendel, some better than others but many work.
With TAC I would give the one DStroud gave a try for sure. Many loading the Grendel always use Small Magnum rifle Primers for the thicker cups found on them.
I mostly use CE223 in my Grendel loads.

CFE and the 123 Gr Hornady projectiles are the ticket. I have tried about 12 different combinations of projectiles and powders. CFE & Hornady has been the most consistent combination.

But my statement still remains...never said how serious is was. In all seriousness, just looking for it to be a fun gun and eventually the girls' deer rifle in about 7 years. I will try the small rifle primer and TAC that I have, but I'll now be on the look out for small rifle magnum primers and the other powders listed.

I am actually doing the same thing. Just built my Grendel upper last week, and bought powder and primers this weekend.
I wanted to use IMR 8208, but couldn't find it around town, so I'm gonna start with the CFE 223 and some 123 grain Hornady SST's.

Should be a good node around 31gr with COL at 2.26 start a couple tentha lower and work up. That is if using hornady brass, lapua brass will be a little lower as it has a little less capacity

My rifle performed better with ARComp than CFE 223. Thoroughly clean your barrel before changing to ammo loaded with this powder and after also as it takes too many rounds for the barrel to settle down and shoot good groups if you don't do this.

You can get yourself 3,000 casings from Midsouth for $1,400.00
I'm gonna get me a 6mm Fat Rat. Full length size to just kiss the shoulder and form to 6mm.
Then fire-form. Will use these rounds for 200 and 300 yards. X ring accuracy.

Update:
Got some new bulk hornady brass. Cleaned the flash hole with tool and was surprised how much brass came out. Btw, I've tried the same with 308 Lapua brass and almost nothing came out. I found some small rifle may primers, cci 450,I purchased by mistake once. I've measured the seating depth of the hornady black ammo with the same 123 for bullet and plan on loading to that length, seems like max mag can handle. Also is about the length other 120-130gr bullets show.
Now powder. Hard to find precise data so let me km now if someone sees something unsafe or something. Gonna go from 26.8 to 28.6 grains of Tac in increments of 0.3gr for my "fireman" ladder test.
