Looking at getting another pistol. Any preference between the three and why?

All 3 good choices. But the better of the 3 is the 10mm. 10mm has more power, and fits in the same size frame as a 45. I went all 40 cal years ago, and all I shoot it 40 S&W and 10mm. When loading ammo for it, it's simple and I don't have to change any dies out between the 2. I only have to adjust the seating die and final chamber/crimp die.
But this all depends on your current inventory of pistols. If you already have some CCW or pistols you use, adding something you don't have or that fills a gap, is a plus.
I've shot pigs with 45 and 10mm, and there's no doubt the energy difference. A 200 grain XTP in a 10mm will flat out hammer a pig. But, for the 2 legged critters, a 45 is a proven round, and a good choice.
And the 40 S&W will fit into a smaller frame pistol than the other 2 rounds. So if size is a factor, consider that.

What will it be used for and what do you already have?

I already have a couple of .40's and a few 1911's in 45ACP. Because of the increase in power I've been looking into the 10mm. Wasn't much impressed when it first came out many moons ago....ammo price was a huge deterrent....
Will be used primarily as a defense gun....personal carry, in a vehicle, or at home. I also keep a 12 gage handy in the house and most of the time in my truck.
I really, really like 1911's but mag capacity is the only downfall. A double stack .40 is what I most often keep handy.
Just starting to look around again....getting an "itch" for another pistol.....trying to decide between another double stack .40, 1911, or something in 10mm.....
I try to keep most firearms in calibers where ammo is plentiful and thereby less expensive....(.380, .40, 45, 308, 223, etc)
The 10mm falls outside of that....but I have other firearms that do also.....

get the 10 but get one which will group 3" or less at 50 yards. this will cut out 90% of the 1911 10mms out there
so whats your budget?

Off the shelf 10mm ammo typically is loaded light and not really much different than the 40. Handloading usually is needed to bring it up to its maximum potential. For EDC, factory ammo choices and prices are better for 40 or 45. If you just want a 10mm, then get one. It certainly is not a bad choice. A 45, especially with +p loads, will bring as much power to the table as can be handled reliably in a civilian self-defense scenario. If you want more capacity, there are lots of choices for double stack 40 or 45's. Pick the one you like. Also, sticking with what you already have makes maintaining an ammo inventory easier. If going double stack, the 40's usually will be a bit thinner and lighter, which helps with comfort and concealability compared to a 45 of the same pistol. The ability to reliably place a shot matters more than the differences in power among these three. It is hard to envision a scenario where a 45 230 gr Ranger T would be inadequate while 10mm would be. Bottom line - here's a vote to keep what you have, use the funds for more ammo, better ammo, or a class. This may be of interest- http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

I will apologize in advance for being the voice of practicality here, but self defense pistols are only effective when you can hit what you are aiming at. You can only hit what you are aiming at if you practice and become proficient. It is way harder to become proficient with a heavy-recoiling round like 10mm. Practice is an uphill battle because ammo is so much more expensive.
I have no doubt that there are a FEW people that master the art of shooting a 10mm, but the vast majority of them are just monitor monitors that get lost on the mystical "stopping power" from other internet ninjas. And let's not even get started on .40 and .45, with modern Ammo there is no difference between that and 9mm.
Do yourself a favor, quit focusing on hardware. Pick one of the most practical pistols that you already have, and spend your money on a case of ammo and some formal instruction.

I have a Kimber Elite Custom in 10mm. It is one of the sweetest shooting 1911s that I own. They designed it with a heavier frame so the recoil seems less than my 45 ACPs.
I have a Walther PPQ in .40. It is a great size for carry and has a very sweet out of the box trigger for an auto. I little snappy but very manageable.
I got the 10mm for hunting and shooting primarily.
As far as the 45 goes, when I started collecting multiple 1911s in that caliber my last one was a really sweet S&W in the 4.25 inch with a two toned light weight frame.
It is fun to shoot and really not much difference recoil wise with the shorter barrel and lighter frame.

I'd stick with .40 if this is going to be mainly defense (since you already have others). If you're worried about power, get some Buffalo Bore or Corbon and do work.

I tend to favor the 10mm for it's hunting possibilities. I have had great success with the Colt Delta Elite, G20 as well as the G40. I am also a fan of 1911's in 45. For some unknown reason, I have never gone the 40 caliber route, Most of my handguns are 9mm.

I had a Performance Center 1911 .45 that was beautiful, shot well, but was just too nice to take hunting. I bought a .40 kit for my P226 which is my sidearm of choice now as I have the 9mm and 22 slides for it also. I would LOVE to get a Kryptek P220 if anyone wants to adopt me for Christmas this year.

.40's are dirt cheap right now
Either go with the biggest baddest or get a 9mm and enjoy shooting it

I love my .45's.
Personal preference, choose the one you shoot the best.

I would consider a 10mm for hunting purposes only.

On these types of posts I usually imagine what I'd do given the parameters of the poster's situation.
If the primary concern is personal defense and general carry, then the 40 hands down because of capacity and smaller frame guns making them more comfortable to carry. I'm a 6'0" 210lbs so I have carried larger pistols but still prefer the smaller frame. That being said, I've been saying 9mm is the best choice for this purpose back when 40 was the "it" caliber. It I totally get not wanting to add another caliber given your current collection.
But then again, if u have a 40 I bet there is one that u might be able to carry comfortably. Then if u still have an itch for another gun, which I'm always for acquiring more gun, then I'm totally intrigued by the 10mm and want one myself. I too have a standard 1911 that I absolutely love but I've been wanting a 10mm.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I would suggest that he should get a 357 sig barrel for one of his 40 caliber pistols. Depending on the firearm, he probably only needs to swap out the barrel and ammo. Then, you have yourself a new toy, sort of.....

Glock 20 for hunting and Glock 29 for EDC. The 10MM with Underwood ammo will tear up a hog. The recoil is not bad. 15 rounds in a Glock 20 and 10 in the Glock 29 is the solution to most problems you might encounter.

Did you have a budget? I would love a Dan Wesson Razorback or Bruin in 10mm. Solid Killers. Expensive, but worth it. You can have slide milled for a reflex sight, makes it effective way past 50 yards He's kinda goofy but You Tube/Google Razor Dobbs. He will show you what the 10mm will do on everything up to Elk and African plains game
