Hi folks,

I know cold fronts move birds south, but how cold does a front have to be to get them migrating? Do they ride the front down or is there a lag of a few days? Any relationship between the strength of the front and how fast they move?

Just looking to get a better idea of the timing. Anything else to consider?

thx!

Nothing in nature happens all at once. They will move south in waves, the strength of the fronts will vary and so will the influx of birds. By late October there should be northern birds in many places throughout Texas.

And not all dove migrate. Some Texas birds never leave home.

Keep an eye out for them. They are a bit larger and darker in color.
Typically they won't stick around for long.

Good luck.

Saw a few flocks of northern birds Wednesday morning after the cool front came through - Palo Pinto County

One thing they will not do is migrate south with a south wind, they are not going to migrate/fly against the wind. They will migrate south with a northern wind to ride.

We had a good number push down with the cool off earlier in the week. They were gone by that same evening.

Out of the last 40 years I have caught the flights about a dozen times. You'll know it when you see it. Pretty special if nature doing it's thing blows your skirt up.
