Looking at getting a new choke for my beretta a300 12 ga to use for squirrel hunting. Last year I missed some squirrels because they weree so high up in the trees so I am trying to keep that from happening again. Should I get an extended full choke or just an extra full choke?

Even a 100 ft. tree is only 33+ yards, choke may not be your problem. Check the choke charts at Briley.com.

A standard factory full choke would probably not reach the tree rats in the 140'+ tall pines in my back yard, especially if you were not standing directly under the tree and aiming straight up. IMO I'd go find a turkey full etc...and run some pattern board tests to see what ammo holds the best pattern's in your gun out until at what distance the pattern falls apart. BTDT out to 50-55 yards was my gun's max and had some real surprises on what ammo to shoot. We were pass shooting geese at Lake Texoma in those days.

before buying a new choke I'd pattern the gun at 30yds with different brand/quality shotshells; a different shotshell may deliver the pattern density you need

When I use a shotgun for squirrel, I shoot high velocity shells with copper plated #4's made for pheasant. It will reach. You don't really need a dense pattern with the #4's. It only takes one or two pellets to knock that sucker right out of the tree. As a bonus, you don't fill up your meat with a lot of shot.

They aren't copper plated so they deform and don't pattern as well. The velocity is also lower than the Federal Upland loads. The Federals cost more but are worth it. Trust me.
