Going elk hunting on an leftover tag in Colorado with my brother and his friend. I was thinking I might need a rangefinder given the terrain. Looking at the Nikon, Leopold, or Vortex. Anything to want or avoid. Wasn't planning on spending more than $300.

Might be able to pick up a used Swarovski LRF for a bit more. Mine has been super dependable.

Had a Sig 2000 which is close to your budget. It was fantastic until it broke on the third outing. So would not recommend the Sig for a big ticket hunt.

I have the Leopold and works great out to 600 yards. Had it 3 years now.

What broke on it?

I've had mine out multiple times over the last 2 years. No problems. I would highly recommend it.

Just started showing dashes instead of distance.

I would have highly recommended it until it quit.

Went back to using the Swaro which is ten years old and still works just like new.

The Swarovski is discontinued.

I'm annoyed with myself because cabellas had the Leuopold on sale for $250 ....now it's $340

Sig is huge bang for buck. Lieca is still hard to beat though. Small aiming area makes it nice.

Bryan Litz did a big field test of all the various models of LRF. The Sig came out near the top for the price. Try and google his LRF article, and it went into great details about them all. For hunting, weight is a big factor. If your shots are less than 600 yards, than most any good LRF will work fine for you. It's not until after 600-800 yards do the different models really start to vary in performance.

I personally run a Bushnell 1600, and I have lasered targets out past 1 mile. It will laser our steel 3'x4' plate out to 1 mile, no problem. But they are a larger unit, and may not be great for mountain hiking and hunting.

Good advice from all, but not all RF will go out to 600 yards. My Nikon 600 will read a coyote, pig, or deer at 400 yards max. If a read out to 600 yards is desired, spend a bit more money on a more capable unit.

I'm not planning on the 500 rang shots, rather I'm trying to avoid them. Need to practice field shooting....and get in better shape for a flat lander.

Thanks.

I've been running a sig 2000 for a while and don't have any complaints.

Not sure what binoculars you use, but I can tell you when I was elk hunting the last thing I wanted to do was carry a separate rangefinder from my binoculars. The best money I ever spent was on rangefinding binoculars. At the time Leica was the only game in town. Now you have an option in Leica, Swarvo, Zeiss, and Vortex. I've seen the 1st gen Leicas for around $1000 since they came out with their HD and HD-B models.

I have the Sig 2000 and the Sig 2400 and they are very good RF's and I have not had any issues but I have heard they have excellent CS so I would send it back and they are likely to replace with New one.

I'm curious about angle rangefinders. I'm in a 15' to the base blind so likely 20' to window and an uphill rise in front and downhill behind. Are the angle rangefinders going to help either way without input on scope or ballistics?

Vortex 1000 is around $250. It will give you the "true" distance to the target depending on the setting. Meaning that it does the math for you. I have been happy with mine. It also has a red illuminated readout and reticle so that you can see it in early and late light. Use if for bowhunting and rifle hunting.

The Sig is fantastic when it works.

Hopefully the new version is working out the quality control problems of the 2000 model because it was a fantastic product when it worked.

Here was a representative discussion of people loving them, but then they just quit.

This thread is not even a year old.

I like my new Sig 2200. Got it for <$400 new. I don't see any way possible to get this much of a LRF for less money.

Cosine comes into play at all distances, but you're really splitting hairs worrying about it less than 400 yards, and less than a 25° up or down angle.

If I were buying a new range finder I would have one with angle finding in it. It'll give you lasered range, and the corrected for angle range.

For instance; 400 yards, "shoots like 380 yards".

There are more viewers/posters there, so it is a larger sample size.

Lots of people selling their current rangefinders for the newer models

you might look for a used one or demo

I have a Leica 1200 Scan. Its been great for many years.
