Hello everyone. A sibling of mine has recently become interested in hunting waterfowl. Mind you he has never gone on his own, only with me and our parents and knows very little but is trying to expand on his knowledge before next season. One of the questions he asked me that stumped me was what is a realistic way to learn or teach yourself how to call in waterfowl. Anything from a basic, feeding, come back, etc. Mind you he does have a job and currently lives on his own. No the most social character. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you folks!

There's all kinds of you tube videos and dvd's that would be beneficial. Depending on the area he's in, there might be someone here that might be willing to help. If he hasn't already, I would have him start with a whistle, it's very easy. Also, have him pick up an inexpensive double reed call and start practicing a basic quack.

So i have sent him a double reed to practice with. I also went through a few youtube videos and asked him to watch them but he doesn't seem to be getting much from them more than just a perspective. I was thinking about having him purchase a "how to" DVD; I have seen a few at Bass Pro but have never watched any myself. Thank you 68A

I have been debating making a 'how to ' movie of duck calling ---and posting it on here----- I could teach him/anyone in about 3 or 4 minutes ----------- most people blow the call wwwaaayyyyyyyy tooo much. Once you see the ducks, about 10 seconds of screaming at them -------- if they turn , about another 10 seconds of the feed call,and MABE another 5 - 10 seconds of feed call the second time. If you blow more than that you are more likely scaring them away, not calling them it.

RNT has a good How To cd that you can listen to and practice while you drive down the road.

3 to 4 minutes would be pretty remarkable. It took me a lot longer than that when I learned. If you decide to make that video I would love to forward it off to him. Any insight is good for him at this point in time. Thank you

Will look into this this afternoon. Thanks for the help! At this point in time from what he tells me he is having a lot of issues on how to blow the more advanced calls like the feed call. I told him he needs to focus on just the basic "quack" before he moves onto that. But he has communicated that he is having issues with the speed and consistency when it comes to those types of calls. Appreciate the help

1. There are plenty of how to videos but I would also recommend watching some hunting videos on you tube to see how hunters call in the field
2. Go to the lake and watch real ducks and what they do.. try to copy that. They are the best teachers.

Break apart duck call
Remove reeds
Put duck call back togethor

Joking. Best way to learn to duck call is to be around the ducks listen and watch. There is no video that can really replace experience. Best thing he can do is leave the call alone for a while.

I think it depends on the individual. Some "students" take to math easily. Some get English...hell some get algebra. And then there are the ones that struggle with those same fields. I've seen where some just cannot get the hang of calling ducks, turkey etc. If he is not naturally a good "student" at calling then he is going to have to work at it . Its not hard to me as I got it pretty easily.

That is very true. I will try to hammer it home that it is all about the work and time you put into it. Right now he is watching an "instructional video" supposedly. We will try to get him in the field practicing and listening as much as possible. Thank you
