I have trained a pup who is now almost two years old. He did great early season dove hunting, and I was able to get on one guided hunt for ducks and he also did well. However, I have not been able to find a dependable guide service who will let me use my dog since then. This dog will be great given some experience and I would like to get out one more time this year, but only have the next two weekends available to hunt before season's end. Live on east side of Houston. Any suggestions are welcomed.

It'll probably have to be a private hunt (just you and the guide). They aren't going to risk your dog ruining a hunt for other clients on a mixed hunt. You also have to consider the risk they incur if there are problems with your dog and theirs, your dog and other clients, etc. I'm not saying your dog would cause any of those problems, only that there's no way for the guide to now whether it will or won't.

Have you called around and asked? If so, did they tell you flat-out "no", even on a private hunt?

The guide's dog was on the hunt I made, and Elvis (my dog), was not an issue although the guide's dog got a little aggressive a couple of times, but nothing serious (humpage). I have been in contact with the guide, who seems willing to get me on, but I know I take back seat to larger parties and overnighters. This week the blind only had one dog blind and hunting was in difficult area with limited visibility. Other dog would be on platform and Elvis would have to be in the blind without vision, so....
I have called around and been on websites. Most services require at least two hunters, most three.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. If the service I went with last time can't accomodate me this coming weekend, I'll start calling. This one if very convenient as they hunt Winnie area which is on my side of town.
Thanks again.

I have access to a friend's property near Sealy, and dove hunt there. There are two ponds, one natural and in an open, but wooded area, and a man-made one. I have been out several times, morning and evening, with a small decoy spread and a couple of Mojos, but haven't seen the first duck. I thought I might have luck there, but nothing.

Call Rocky Creek Retrievers. Owner is a dog trainer and welcomes clients' dog on the hunt. Even though he is in El Campo, it would be worth the drive for you and your dog.

Keep looking. I do 90% of my duck hunts with guides and I always bring my dog. They are out there. Generally you need to have at least two guns per hunt. If you can find the right guide with the right property you can stick with them and book multiple hunts through the season before it even starts. That's been working better for me than picking up a lease.

Give the fellas from Red Bluff Prairie in Garwood a shout. I hunted with Bryan, who's an exceptional dog trainer in Sealy, and I'd bet he'd be willing to have a dog accompany.

You guys are awesome! I got a reference for Rocky Creek Retrievers out of Brenham, and the operator, Steve, is more than willing to help and actually has everything set up in his blinds in El Campo for dog training.
I will keep all of your recommendations/suggestions for next year as sadly duck season is ending in 3 weeks and I'm out the last one.
Thanks again for your help. Great to know there is a fantastic community of hunters out there.
Trey
