Shot a average size doe yesterday @ 100yards. Decided to try the high shoulder shot. Used factory loaded 140grain AB out of my 280rem. Well the shot worked. It dropped her instantly. But I wasnt too impressed with the AB. Hit left side, broke scapula and vertebrata but that was it. Bullet completely fragmented and only penetrated about 3.5-4". Not a big fan of high shoulder shot either because it only did minimal dame too lungs so it took A little while for the deer to die. However last year i used a 160 AB on a nice buck that passed through a low shoulder shot at 100yards. I think ill go back to 150 partitions.

I hit a very large hog (250 lb+) in what was essentially a high shoulder shot (my scope was off) at about 165 yards. The bullet was the 7mm 160 grain pushed to 3200 out of my 7mm Ultra and it too never exited. I've since moved on to the Barnes TSX which also has its quirks, but always penetrates reliably.

I've worked loads with the Accubond for 7mm-08 and 6.5 Creedmoor and they are extremely accurate bullets. Although I have not shot any game with them yet, I have heard more positives than negatives about them.

Thanks for sharing. That's good info for future reference.

They do shoot well, better than the 160's which is why i switched. Probably cause my 1 in 10 twist. We have nilgai on my lease so i need something that can crack bones and keep going.

That doesn't sound like trouble? It sounds like "you" are choosing the wrong bullet for you goals. Looks like you need to look to Barnes. I personally like their front insides looking like scrambled eggs and that's what that bullet does.

My experience is the same. I've recovered more Accubonds than all other bullets combined. You either have to go heavy for caliber or take behind the shoulder shots only -- or switch to something else.

Entrance wound of 110gr Accubond from my 6.8 AR @ 75 yards. It exploded, to say the least.

Surprised me cause They advertise the AB to perform like a partition but it seems more like a ballistic tip. I want to try the 140 TTSX next.

Surprises me too because the bottom half is bonded so I can't see how it could separate. Shoot enough game and you'll see some strange things. They are designed to behave like a partition. Many people swear by them but i've never used them on game.

scottfromdallas, they don't separate. In that regard they perform as advertised and mushroom perfectly. They just stop too soon, probably because of that expansion.

Looks like it killed the deer. What was the problem?

Not to offend anyone, but if you're going to shoot bullets at crazy high velocity, I'd expect these results out of this type bullet construction.

As odd as it may seem, going heavier and slower with the same Accubond, might yield better results.

FYI, the rule of thumb with copper bullets is to always aim at bone. If you ignore the rule, it's very likely that you won't be impressed.

Thats what i am saying, this one did not mushroom, it seperated. I gutted, skinned and quarted the deer and there was no bullet - just pieces. And they specify no maximum velocity to maintain weight. None the less, the deer is dead so it worked just not they way it was supposed to. The ability to shoot through bone is why I want to try the barnes.

Obviously no one bullet will suit the needs of every hunter. Otherwise we'd all be shooting "Instant Death" or something similarly named. I've heard the good and the bad about every Barnes, Partition, Accubond, Berger, Sierra, and many others. I always find it interesting when a bullet fails to do what was expected of it. Because there was a reason this happened .... whether it is evident or not.

From my experience, the TSX will do that & the TTSX will do it better. BUT you better drop them in their tracts as there won't be much of a blood trail.

Man, you guys just can't seem to find the perfect bullet, as if there was one. Meanwhile, I'm still tagging them (hogs, deer, coyotes) through the lungs with Nosler Ballistic Tips and have nothing to complain about after 35 years or so using that bullet. And if you just have to shoot bones, go get some Nosler Partitions.

And I think Fireman mentioned the concept of using a heavier slower bullet. Yep, that'll do it. My old 35 Remington with old fashioned Remington Core-Locts left the greatest thru and thru penetration and blood trail you can imagine.

If I was going to switch bullets in my 260, I'd probably go to Accubonds. With the 270, I'd probably go to that 140 gr Sierra BTHP. Nobody ever talks about that bullet. I guess it isn't fancy enough, but it sure is tough enough.

Never shot a deer, but just about everything else with my 6.8.......It is a true killer on hogs. Deep penetration. Never had one frag out.

I've never had an issue with ballistic tips, interlocks, SST, etc.. but I'm only launching them from 2400-2800 fps depending on cartridge and bullet weight. For my mule deer hunt in 10 days I'm either using a 338 Federal with 180 NBTs at 2750fps or my 308 with 150 NBTs at 2850 fps.

The accubond is only supposed to retain 65-70% of its weight according to the nosler website. So you should expect 30-35% of fragments destroying meat and making a mess. I would expect this to change based on speed and hitting bone. The weight retention is pretty low for a bonded bullet. Try an aframe, interbond, scirocco, trophy bonded bear claw or a monometal if you want a high weight retention and a quarter sized exit.
