I took my son for his first pheasant hunt this past weekend for youth season in Kansas. We hunted all day Saturday and a couple hours on Sunday. We had some really good dog work. We found the birds mainly in CRP. We saw a bunch of pheasants, 2 groups of quail, 2 rabbits, a skunk, and a badger. The hens were holding tight. We had to kick them up. The roosters were all different. We had several double points and I would walk my son up between the two dogs for the shot. We found quail in two areas. They were way too fast. We found two rabbits. One offered a safe shot. We had double points on the badger and the skunk. The dogs picked up the scent of the badger at about 75 yards. They were locked solid. I walked my son up, then moved the dogs up. We kept inching forward waiting for a bird. We had gone so far I started to think it was chickens (they stink). All of the sudden my lead dog reared back and fell backwards. I yelled at the dogs to get off and they ran behind me as the badger ran by me at about 5 feet. I foolishly followed him to his hole. We also got a double point on the skunk. I had one dog on each side of my son. I was working them forward and my lead dog was acting weird. All of the sudden I saw the tail come up. I yelled off, but it was too late. My lead dog got sprayed. My son also got sprayed on his glove. We were about to hit the road, but we stayed another hour to air the dogs out.

Here are a few pictures. This is my son's first rabbit and pheasant.

Some action shots:

Between hunts:

The birds on the side of the road weren't afraid, so I took a picture.

Greatness.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.
