I'm interested in purchasing my first crossbow. I don't want to go all out but I don't want buy cheap low quality either. Can I get some suggestions for a mid level bow.

I'm not new to hunting just new to bow hunting and now that I live in the Hill Country I think I'd like to give it a try.

I just started too ... Barnett makes good x-bows - I picked up a Raptor FX2 on sale at Cabelas for $299. Love it.

Agreed with Excalibur, not having to have a bow press to change strings is to me a no brainer.

I picked up a Parker Enforcer at Cabelas a couple weeks ago for the exact reasons you describe. The guy highly recommended it because of the lifetime warranty, the cost vs quality and the reliability. He said he rarely gets a broken Parker back but sees a ton of Barnett's come in broke. I have no personal experience so can't confirm. What I can say is it's accurate right out of the box, easy to use and seems well built. From what I could gather it's middle of the road price wise. Def not the cheapest but not near as expensive as some of the nice Excalibur's.

PSE Fang X-bow package is a good starter set-up. 350 fps fast, accurate & cost about $350 or less.

Not the answer you're looking for, but since you said you're new to bow hunting, have you considered a vertical compound bow? If you're physically able and interested in eventually growing in the sport, you may find much more satisfaction in going the vertical bow route. About a decade ago when I was looking to get back into archery hunting, I was going to buy a xbow. Luckily, the archery shop convinced me to try a compound and I shot several models and new that was the route I needed to go. I have since used my compounds to hunt several species of big game in several states, compete in various tournaments where I've made many friends, and participate in regular backyard target shooting with my wife and family. Going with a compound wasn't just picking a weapon for deer season, it has been influential to my lifestyle. Now I'm planning on making the jump to traditional.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll be making a trip to Cabela's in Buda to check out your suggestions.

JT I used to be big into vertical bows my first one was a Martin Lynx in black satin. I had to cover it with camo tape to hunt. I shot 3D matches when that was the big thing and I bow hunted some. Even back then I always thought how I'd like to try a crossbow.

I hunt with Traditional, Compound and Crossbow. They all have their place in hunting and can all be fun. To me the traditional is the most fun but sometimes conditions call for something different or the mood strikes for something different.

Hunt with what you like and enjoy the time doing so.

recently purchased a Wicked Ridge Invader G3 package and love it. I have already taken a nice sized sow using Slick Trick 100 Magnums and it was a short tracking job.

Good luck to you on your purchase and this season.
