I have done Crossfit off and on since 2008. The "on" was usually for 3-6 months at a time and then backing off for 3-6 months. Crossfit is amazing if done properly. For me, after 3 months of strict CF programming I started dreading the workouts. The daily beat down was fun for a while and then it became mentally punishing and I started hating it. I haven't done strict CF in a couple of years because of this. I now use it to enhance my other athletic interests. I love to run. Specifically, I love to do 20k and half-marathon trail races. My main workouts are 2 days of running and 2 days of swimming a week and I try to put in a CF-like met-con for strength and mental conditioning. Occasionally, I will work OLY lifts as I believe them to be very beneficial.

The only advice I will give is to scale your workouts. Don't try to progress too rapidly. I believe that was part of my issue and the reason it was always so tough on me mentally.

Have fun!

Really good advice. Close friends with two CF instructors that did it most every day for 5+ years - both have had to have surgery for injuries from CF. Pace it and mix it in with other, reduced impact, activities...

Just wait til day 3 post workout, You'll really be hurting then. I've done CF for 3 years. My personal recommendation. Stick to every other day. Your body will thank you later. Supplement the off days with other outdoor activities you enjoy, such as mountain biking, swimming, jogging, etc.

I love it...its always a different work out, covers the whole body, very intense but at the same time you can work out to your abilities, there is a level for everyone...plus the girls that work out don't wear much..lol

It's not bad at all and it introduces people to weightlifting that probably would not have before. Work outs are hard and will get you in shape but for the most part they are just very random. Didn't seem like there was a goal exactly in mind or a way to really progress. If you wanna good workout that's different, crossfit is for you.

The different workouts are the reason i stick with it. Programming is key in crossfit.

i have done it pretty regularly for about a year and half and love it. I played sports and lifted growing up, played a very small amount of college football and feel like I am in better shape now as a 38 year old...although I stay sore all the time these days frown

the randomness is what I like the most. on days I cant make it to crossfit I will see if a fed buddies want to work out at work and laugh when they say they cant do squats today because they did "legs" 2 days ago or cant do shoulder press because they did shoulders yesterday...

i know 3 firefighters who own their own cross fit box's and they don't even do it anymore, they will be the first to tell you outside of the time that several of the CF exercises are HORRIBLE for your joints. I've had over 20 leg surgeries and all 3 of my ortho surgeons said they LOVE cross fit because their business has been booming over last 4 years

Crossfit done correctly is no worse than any other strenuous exercise program. There is a lot of squatting but most people already had those problems before joining a crossfit gym.

so you've had 20 surgeries lifting heavy weights, but not doing crossfit...got it.

what "crossfit exercises" are horrible for your joints? what are "crossfit exercises" anyway? crossfit incorporates exercises from power lifting and oly lifting, as far as I know crossfit didn't make up their own exercises.

I am 38 now, started crossfit at 35 with plantar fasciitis and shoulder problems, both of which were gone within about 6 months.

I was doing crossfit before it was crossfit. Used same principles at the collegiate level at the Academy. Still train under same principles

Biggest issue with crossfit isn't the crossfit or the work outs. It's doing them improperly and coaches not fixing or slowing people down on them. See same thing at the high school and Jr high program level also.

As with any fitness training it's only as good as your form and coaching
