I have a few questions for those that have some experience.

I am going to try to do some calling this year. But I typically do not get to hunt until mid to late December. At that time what is the preferred call or rattling?

Can you call in does by sounds?

Only ever tried rattling. Corn has always been my go to attractant. Rattling may still be effective in December depending where your at.

SHNF so no baiting that is why I am thinking about calling but not sure what they want to hear. Is it too late for rattling since the rut is over by mid December?

There is usually a second rut in December for the does that weren't bred so you could possibly have some success rattling if an interested buck is in the area.

Where will you be hunting? South Texas rut is usually later than some other areas and the doe not bred the first time will come back in around 28 days after first cycle. Rattling may be the ticket.

Rattling can work at just about time during the season, you just have to experiment with how and when you do it. With lower deer pops and higher doe/buck ratio it might take a while for a buck to sneak in instead of rush in on you. I have been successful using a grunt call to call in bucks during the peak of the rut when rattle would not get them. They sneak in quietly and takes them a while to get there. They moved when I called with the grunt call. I called in 8 bucks over a 30-40 minuted period during a draw hunt on a WMA once. I have had success when fawns were small to call in does with a predator call when calling coyotes. The does about run me over. Not sure if that would work that late in the year though. Deer are curious for the most part but hunting pressure/other calling might hurt your chances on calling them to you. Just allow enough time for them to approach you(30 minutes minimum of calling IMO per location).

I once spooked a group of deer while getting to my stand. They snorted and ran off, I never saw what they were. About 45 minutes later, I used a doe bleat can. Two young does came in at a trot to right under my stand. I'm guessing those were the the deer I spooked on the way in.
