How does this work? I didn't get drawn to Palo Duro for aoudad but I really want to take my dad. Also, the Schreiner Park hunt and Brazos bend hunt.
Thanks for any help.

I used to go standby quite a bit. Each hunt has different standby methods and some don't allow any. I would always call before hand and they will fill you in. A lot of times now with the second chance there are often no standby slots avalible.

They aren't guaranteed spots, so Palo Duro would be a long way to drive from Katy to end up not getting to hunt. Brazos Bend? not so far.

With the new system you probably won't have but 1 standby spot available. I went for standby at Brazos Bend last year and there was like 70 people waiting for them to draw 1 name. I won't be going back for standby this year.

Some places are better than others, but I won't share that for the whole world to see. LOL

True, but I would get to skip a few days of school and enjoy the Canyon, regardless of the hunt Some places are better than others, but I won't share that for the whole world to see. LOL Haha! If there is that much competition, it doesn't really matter, does it?

Depending on where the check in station is, that is far as you will get. Won't be able to do any sight seeing being they will have the park closed. Best thing to do is call ahead a couple days before the hunt. All the places I have called, they would tell me how many, if any, stand by slots were available.

IMO the Pending 2nd Drawing deal has about killed the StandBy at the Gate Straw Drawing that used to be worth the travelling. Not now though unless you live within couple hours or so.
Huge problem with TPW Austin getting the Stand By Hunt Fee payments in a timely manner, and the other problems with hot checks too, from what I was told. All that is eliminated with the 2nd Drawing and CC payment over the 'net.
I would suspect there are still a few of the SB Hunts available but not many.. Mebbe CC payments on an I Phone App would bring back a few too. Ron

When I hunted Caprock Canyons for Aoudad, people were driving from as far away as Colorado to try and draw a single standby position. The guy from Colorado stated "where else can someone from out of State hunt free range Barbary Sheep for under a hundred bucks". Him and a few others got turned away that day. So Palo Duro might be a difficult standby draw too. What some of the hunting areas used to do if there was only one standby opening, they would still let hunters pool the maximum number of people on an application card for the hat draw. So depending on the hunt from two to four people could draw on that one standby position. I don't know if they are still letting WMA managers have discretion to do that anymore or not with changes from the new draw system. So if there is only one standby position, be sure to ask how the on site drawing works for that WMA before making the long drive with your dad.

I was looking at the Standby thing as well. From what I can tell, don't listen to the folks that think the new system makes it not worth trying to go Standby. Just look at last years' stats (on the draw hunt page). Overall (across categories), you have almost a 70% chance of being selected for a hunt. Many categories are at or near 100% of standby folks that show up are allowed to hunt. Some are more difficult, however. Hardest to be selected standby are Gun Deer Either Sex (38%, but varies a bunch depending on the specific area); Gun Mule Deer (44%); Exotic (49%); Gun Deer Management (52%). Might as well go ahead and try, just have an alternative plan if you don't get selected. Still get to spend time with your dad.

I can't confirm but one and that was Brazos Bend. It says there were zero standby hunters but I went to both hunts for Either Sex hoping for a standby position. There were at least 60 people there and they let in 1 or 2. So, they are not reporting all the numbers.

I hunted Caprock Canyon Aoudad on standby a few years ago. They had a slot for one group open and there were 2 groups wanting to draw, so 50/50. We made it. I killed a ewe on the 2nd day. Saw a tremendous ram, that my son got a shot at, but I think excitement got to him and he missed.

At the Palo Duro hunt you go to the park headquarters at the main gate on day of the hunt. Tell them you have a group that wants to put in for stand by. IF They have any no shows they'll throw all standbys in a hat and draw for available spots. The last time I did this there were a dozen guys hoping for two spots, and I didn't get drawn.

Yessir, I remember how it worked on January. Me and My dad were the only drawn hunters so the ranger called up a farmer in Friona to bring his step-son up to hunt...lol. Thanks for all the info. Let's see how it goes.

I was drawn and hunted Palo Duro last year. I believe they drew two standby hunters. Only 4 showed up.
