Why don't you see any .270 Long range guns?

Really bullet selection relative to BC and Speed. Just not as many good options. I will say though the 270WSM can be a beast We have killed plenty of whitetail over 800 with the 140 and the 150 LRAB

I'm guessing available twist rate for barrels. Most .270 Win. rifles that I've seen have a 1 in 10" twist. To take advantage of a longer, heavier bullet I'd assume you'd need a bit faster twist like a 1 in 9" or 8".

Up until last year the BC was easily beaten by the 6.5 mm and the 7mm, each bracket either side of the .277". Berger came out with a high BC .277 bullet, and barrel makers are going to have to catch up, and build the twist to stabilize it.

In my opinion the only people that will be interested in it are those that have a stockpile of 270 brass. Everyone else might as well go with the tried and true 6.5 mm or 7 mm, same as always. The 280 Rem, or 280 Ackley Improved is on the same action as the 270, but will produce better external ballistics, again, same as always.

I like my .270's. They're about perfect for what I use them for which is hunting deer and hogs within 350 yards. I very seldom ever take a shot over 250 yards, most are 150 and under.

Anything farther, I like my 7mm-08.

I put a 270 Winchester together a couple of years a go with a 1 in 10 Brux barrel. My go to bullet has become the Berger 140 VLD and has been nothing short of fantastic. Scope is a 4.5x30 Bushnell 6500.

Some calibers are good for long range and others fall short. Some calibers are good for hunting and others fall short. I think the 270win falls into the good hunting caliber, capable at longer than usual hunting distances but not a capable long range caliber. I love my 270 for hunting, and have total faith in it out to 300 yards on white tail with ammo of my choice.

270 is capable at "long range". NRA designates 600 yards, and beyond, as "long range". 600 isn't that big of a deal, we sent subsonic .308 Win to 500 today, and got repeated hits. But there are simply better options than the 270 to shoot 600+.

If you look at the ballistics, a 270 Win with a 135 SMK (or Berger VLD's) has less drop and less wind drift than a 308 does with 175 SMK. So, it can easily be used as a long range caliber. But.... There are not that many match grade bullet options. I learned to shoot long range with a 270. Why- because it's what I had and people said it wouldn't work. So I made it work, and work very well with a 135 SMK running about 2950 fps, which is not that fast. Also, it is a long action round with a long neck. If you run a long action, there are better long action calibers than a 270 with higher BC and heavier bullets.

It seems as though once a bore diameter has been originated and adopted, it is basically stuck with whatever twist rate it is born with---generally speaking. I think that's applicable to the .25s and .27s. They were popularized during the age of the express rifle. The 6.5s, 7s, and .30 calibers came about in a different age.

I'm contemplating a semi-custom 270 in the near future but not necessarily geared towards long range shooting. I have a bunch of 270 brass Ive saved over the years so it makes sense for me. I like the fact that it's not a tactical/trendy/sexy round so it's super easy to find ammo and components in stock. I'm thinking about a Tikka action with Krieger barrel and Iota stock.

If I ever rebarrel a gun to a 270 cal I will go with a twist capable of stabilizing the new berger bullet, I see no reason not to. However like JG said if I rebarel it I will probably do a 280 ai or a 6.5 mm 06 etc. Why limit yourself to 1 or 2 good bullets when 6.5 and 7mm have several.

6.5mm and 7mm are just better the end.

I'd agree with you on that, but I'd have to say it's a purely subjective judgment.

A2B, this is my .270 "long range" rifle. I've had it for about 9 years, now. I had a "Straight Jacket" put on it and worked up some loads that, before my eyesight went south, would allow me to "ring the bell" at 600 yards on a regular basis. But, as others have stated, there are much better caliber options, with the appropriate barrel twists needed to stabilize the new bullets.

I got my Browning 270 A Bolt out to 500 easily about a month ago got hits every shot but beyond that it became much more difficult exactly like JG told me it would due to BC

The 270 is more popular among sportsmen. It never has been popular for target shooting.

Kind regards, charlesb

Mike, I like your rifle, but dang those rings!!! That scope is so high, I'd have to turkey neck to get a sight picture! Look into a Karsten cheek piece to get you more centered up.

The thing is, I've got a neck like a giraffe, and I know all about getting the optic as close to the barrel as possible. But, fellers, it works for me, and, as mentioned, I don't have the eyesight to shoot long range any more. And with this rig, I can pound 'em all into one ragged hole at 200 yards. It ain't broke; I ain't fixin' it!

Before the macular degeneration started taking its toll, I could pack 'em in pretty tight, even with my "high relief" set-up!

It's more important to get natural point of aim than the scope close to the barrel. If you've achieved natural point of aim, then that's all the matters.
