I loaded over 200 rds of 280ai this weekend with no probs. Then started load dev for my 308 and I can't get 1 out of 5 primers to seat -- I can't get the handle to depress and a couple of them took an unusual amt of force and deformed the primers slightly on 2 of them.

Using CCI BR2 primers with RCBS hand priming tool with Hornady once fired brass -> hand deprimed -> SS tumbled -> FL resized -> flash hole deburred and primer pocket cleaned.

Was the brass from the target ammo with the primers crimped? Hornady sells some loaded ammo with crimped primers, the crimp has to be removed

How can I tell? I'm a total newb to reloading. I've got a couple hundred pieces of brass from factory hornady ammo shot by me in this gun. Most was SST Suoerformance but some are Amax and a few Match HPBT.

Ok I searched the interweb and discovered the hornady brass has crimped primer pockets. It's it worth it to swage them or should I just start over with some Lapua brass?

They're headspaced to your chamber. I'd swage them.

Is swageing them better than hand reaming them with something like the hornady primer pocket tool? Will I be sacrificing anything in accuracy/consistency or shorten the brass life due to loose pockets sooner?

It's probaly just the one of the batches/boxes that's crimped. I would take my chamfer tool that you do the inside of your case necks with and ream them out. That's as easy as anything else when you only have a few say 20-30.
I have never noticed it hurting anything at all.
Tool like this. Just look closely you can see which are crimped and ones that are not.

Try another shell holder! Have seen some brass not line up just right. Have run into issues with 40 s&w brass, set all the way in holder and primer would deform at times. Slip it in and hold on to it as you seat primer and you can feel sweet spot to seat them.

I think the others are right that the problem is crimped vs. non-crimped cases. This is probably not the correct fix.

Yep, I had the exact same issue with once fired Hornady Match Ammo brass. I bought a RCBS Primer Pocket Swager to fit my press. Works like a charm.

I Have that set it works great.
It doesn't remove the metal, just reforms it

This is how I cleared all my LC brass for 223 and 308. I haven't had any problems so far but since I had 1k of each brass I haven't gone through the entire 2nd shooting yet. They should all last my lifetime.

Problem solved -- got the RCBS swager and I'm already up and running again. Thx for the help.
