My neighbor informed me this past weekend that 2 owls flew out of my Monarch and one smaller one seemed to be left in there. He said it looked like the sliding window had opened up and detected a strong odor when driving up to it but when he saw the smaller owl still there he decided not to open it up. Has anyone found a fail safe way to deal with owls?

Shoot them with a 22. Clean the blind out with bleach. Leave a open bowl of vinegar in it until it evaporates. That will get the smell out. Keep the windows shut.

Don't think I would recommend shooting a protected bird, especially on an open forum. They are protected by Federal and State law.....

Best way to keep them out is to keep the blind closed up, otherwise it is just a big nice roost..

Sorry to hear Dave. Owls are no Bueno buddy. Will really wreck a blind. Might as well plan on hauling it into town and power washing it. Would leave it down for the summer and reinstall in the fall when they've moved on to another local.

Really, really, really dumb suggestion. Owls are federally protected along with hawks, falcons and eagles. $20,000 minimum fine for killing one and even suggesting it on an open forum is idiotic.

Better advice would be to open the door, let them vacate and then close it up tight. Owls can only get into a blind if you allow then a way in.

Good stuff, any type deterrents such has putting mothballs in, hawk type models perched on the top, etc.? I do plan on cleaning it out and trying to lock down the windows.

DQ, I cant think of any deterrent outside of keeping it closed up, a crow may help during the day, but would be a target at night, so....

In my younger years, I worked at what you may call "rehabbing" birds of prey (yes, we had a permit). I can tell you that the blind floor and probably the lower half of the walls may be nasty, owl chicks can shoot a stream of crap a long way, this keeps it out of the nest. I would be leery if your son may hunt that stand, just from possible bacteria, or what not, certainly would disinfect the hell out of it after cleaning it a good as possible.

If it was mine and I was to keep it, I get a pump up sprayer, after it was as clean as possible, I'd mix a strong bleach/water solution and spray the inside down, then next trip I'd use a real strong Pine-sol solution. If the smell persist, or you want to further kill everything in there, buy or rent a small Ozone machine, get a generator and go fumigate it for 3-4 hrs.

Owls bring in a lot of rodents and rodents can carry all kinds of "stuff", including Toxoplasmosis (had to look that one up, been a long time) and roundworms.

Better windows, or a way to latch them.

Have dealt with them more times than I care too... some folks cant seem to remember to close windows after they hunt.

Remove old carpet and throw away sweep everything out, get a pump up sprayer with a heavy mix of bleach and water and hose the whole thing down. Make sure its closed up good and let it dry out and it will be good as new.

Depending on how your windows are made, you might try running duct tape or gorilla tape around the edges at the end of the season.

I'd burn it. With my kind of luck I'd catch some untreatable disease trying to clean it up.

Isn't it illegal to mess with the nesting area of a federally protected bird? Better check it out and look for a nest in there before considering setting it on fire.
