I know 'playing fetch' with 'gun dogs' is sort of frowned upon but I can't help myself. I make sure she is steady but I don't make her retrieve to hand as I don't want to pick up a slobbery tennis ball over my lunch break. Do y'all play fetch with your gun dogs?

You bet.
Tug-a-war is frowned upon but not "play fetch". When I release Cassie with "OK" then there are no rules for steadiness or delivery to hand.

Get a throwing dummy. It has a short length of no-slobber rope attached.

I'm glad I saw this as I was about to ask the same question. Except my new pup was 12wks old yesterday. I've been using a soft rope toy to tire her out as she doesn't have her Rabies shot yet so we can't go to the park to run around. Is this a bad idea? Later on I'll be getting her a bumper to retrieve when I start her training.

I do fun bumpers. Normally this is before a training session or after she is released from being restricted on/in a run for a period.
