My dealer should receive the stamp for my 2nd suppressor, an SAS barricade soon. I'm trying to decide which rifles to chop and thread. I have a nice Ruger m77 22-250 with a 24" shilen barrel and I'm debating whether I'd like it chopped to 20 for the can. Anyone else done this? Think I'll lose 30fps per inch cut off or more?
I already chopped my 243 to 21, so I will for sure run it with the can before I chop anything else. But I'm still would appreciate real world experience with shorter 22-250s.

Mine have always been 24" to the muzzle, suppressor or not.
Just remember, no matter how short you cut it, a .22-250 is still fast.

I could leave it as long as possible, thread 1/2" instead I guess. I'd rather do 5/8" and use the new DT can without an adapter, but I'd have to cut 4" to get enough muzzle diameter to thread 5/8" with a good shoulder.
Sounds like 4" less barrel might cost me 150fps though. I'm gonna think on it a while before I do it, I may just leave it like it is. I'm not sure I have to run a can on every rifle I own anyway.
I'll know soon how much MV I lost by chopping my 243 down 3".

My 22-250 has a 22" barrel. Chrono numbers are at the house... Don't remember what they are, but not disappointing. Shoots great, too. I say go for it!

I'm going to build a 22-250 AI and cut it to 20 inches for my suppressor, it should still have velocities near a 24 inch standard 22-250.

My factory Vanguard has 20in barrel. No idea on any of the technical specs and I'm not nearly as good of a shot as the group posted. It works though, go for it! Even without a suppressor, the smaller barrel makes for faster handling in trucks and blinds.

I prefer a 24" barrel for my .22-250's although my current one wears a 22"
I read an article one time stating that if you have a barrel shorter than 22" on a .22-250 all you have is a loud .223 and it kinda stuck with me
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

My factory Vanguard has 20in barrel. No idea on any of the technical specs and I'm not nearly as good of a shot as the group posted. It works though, go for it! Even without a suppressor, the smaller barrel makes for faster handling in trucks and blinds. Does the noise/muzzle blast bother you at all with your 20" barrel?

Noise is very mild, or I'm just used to it. Never notice muzzle blast. I've seen what a 55 gr soft point out of a 223 can do and what a 55gr soft point out of my gun can do. It does a better job than the 223, for sure (bigger "wound area," lot more clotting and damage in general). The technical stuff I do not know about at all.

Only way I could see this as close would be to compare a 16" 22-250 to a 26" 223.

Nothing else like the sound of a .50 Had a Sako Handy Hunter Carbine for several years, wish I still had it though its second owner will not part with it. That one has a 18.5 inch barrel and like Chital said there is a difference in the wound canal between it and a 223. Never ran that one across a chrony but with the old 60gr Nosler solid base bullets and some others it sure was deadly. Sure you loose some velocity but the 22-250 has some to spare.

Went with a 22" vs 26" on a 220 swift and lost a negligible amt of fps and still a tack driver.

Just for the sake of knowing: does a suppressor reduce noise better if a barrel is kept more on the longish side?

Well, to get enough muzzle diameter to get a good shoulder for 5/8 I'd have to chop about 5". I'm leaning toward leaving the M77 like it is.
Maybe a 20" 22-250 with an 8 twist would be a good next project though.
JG, singleshot85, anyone else with experience: what kind of barrel life can one expect with an 8 twist 22-250 running 75gr bullets?

Years ago I wanted a 220 Swift. Ruger made a run of them on the 70's. I found one at a gun show, being sold by a New Mexico cowboy. He'd had the bull barrel cut to 20 inches, the logic being he could keep it on the dashboard of his truck and grab it when he saw a coyote. I liked the concept and bought the rifle. It liked every load I put in it, and brother would it shoot with the best loads. When I finally shot the barrel out, I had it replaced with a leaner contour 20 inch barrel. I'm giving up fps and I don't care. The cartridge is still a laser beam. At this point in my life I do not want a 26 inch bull barrel on a rifle of mine. Light is right...

If anything I'd recut the chamber depending on round count and rethread it. I purposefully get a heavy varmint contour so I can chamber when needed in the "fast" calibers when the throat gets shot out. When I rechamber it ill recrown it. I like to start around 25", after a rechamber and recrown I'll end up between 23 and 22"
