Was at my Gun Club today, saw this thumper for sale. I've been studying the Freedom Arms single actions. This, I think is a "Field Grade" but with an octagon barrel. Hummmmm????? Its on consignment $1400. price is good, "fair"

That will be fun for about 50 5 rounds and then probably rarely come out after that. If you do not already have a nice 1911, spend on that. A good 1911 is a real joy.

What are the details on the 1911? Very nice looking. Nice groups. What ammo did you use? If you just want the 454, then go for it. You may love it, doubt it, but sometimes you just have to test stuff out. Personally, skip the 454 and buy more ammo for the 1911 or a Dillon to feed it, or a defensive pistol class.

They're supposed to be good. Seems kind of pricey to me, for what you get.
If it tickles your fancy, you'd be the best judge of whether you would be willing to part with that much cash for it.
Nobody could see how or why I could enjoy my 45-70 Guide Gun, but I shot it a lot and enjoyed it quite a bit.
Kind regards, charlesb

dude!!! run back to that gun store and buy that freedom arms!! a field grade model 83 in 454 will run you $2283.00. then add $545.00 for the Octagon barrel. http://www.freedomarms.com/ http://www.freedomarms.com/it may be used but it doesn't look like it was shot much if at all. they are extremely accurate revolvers and they hold their value really well. that is an absolute steal!

Get it! Hunted with mine for several years until financial situation caused me to move it. Wouldn't mind getting another someday.

Buzz, I think you could save a little coin and pick up a S&W 460XVR I 8 3/4 or 6 inch barrel and then shoot 460, 454, 45lc. And if you are worried about recoil, the S&W is compensated. The Freedom Arms is sweet if you want to stick with single action. The difference between 460 and 454 is incredible from a hunting standpoint.

Don't be scared homie. Do it! I've wanted one a long time but never came across a good enough deal.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

That the one that got me interested in big bore hand guns. I got to shoot one with a 12 inch barrel, that thing rocked you back, while the 8 inch was much more tame

1911's are great autos as I have several but that FA 454 is a true hunting revolver. I have 2 Premier Grade 454's that I have hunted with for many years. One is 7 1/2 barrel with scope while the other is 6 with open sights. FA revolvers are the finest made and shoot great. Recoil is really not that bad if you are use to shooting 44 mag. Be sure to use a solid rest while hunting. Price doesn't look too bad if it is in good shape.

That is a very good price on that gun. I would order the wood grips for it. They are easier to shoot with the wood grips. Freedom Arms are all and made and built start to finish by the same gunsmith. No assembly line. They are exceptionally accurate. The reason for the wood grips is so they will move in your hand easier after you fire. The Pachmeyr grips don't move and has more impact on your wrist. I have a couple and love them.
