Contemplating putting in some food plots this spring (Live oak County / George West). Was wondering if anyone in the near by area plants spring plots. I planted last Oct and the turkeys pretty much got all the seed before it could germinate. So I have to worry about the turkeys and rain now, I spent weeks getting the ground ready and a put out alot of lime. Any suggestions or keep pumping the protein, I've already fed 5 tons since January on 1700 acres.

Food plots are hit or miss in South Texas. If we keep getting rains like we have been you won't need food plots. I do plant cowpeas/soybeans every year about 30 miles east of you. Last year I hit it right with rain and my food plots did well and provided grazing from May till late July. The year before they did not do as well and only had about 30 days of grazing but it was much drier. That year I feed 5.5 tons of protein compared to last year I fed only 2.5 tons feeding year round. This year I am not feeding near as much protein so far either. I planted my food plots on Tues., about 11 acres of cowpeas this year. We have a good chance of rain the next 2 days.

Who did you get the seed from? My place isn't far from Lyssy&Eckel they may have cowpeas. I've been wanting to try eagle seed soybeans.

I get it from L/E and drive over to Kenedy to Pogue AgriPartners on HWY 72 west of town about a mile. I have had bad luck with Hutchinson Soybeans the last 2 yrs now. I switched from them to Iron & Clay and Red Ripper Cowpeas this year. I have had great luck with Lab Lab and Cowpeas in the past. Call GW store and ask them what they have in stock.

Ill be planting next weekend... was going to do it this weekend but getting a cold snap here.. good news is I wont even have to break the ground much.... just gona run the finish mower over the plot and run the disc over it once set less aggressive...then broadcast... always do cow peas, arrowleaf, and vetch here. even though I got wild vetch growing everywere... may just leave it out
