Hello all, I am looking into getting a 300 blackout upper for my ar to use for deer and hog hunting, I have seen a lot of vids and did some reading on the subject. I have seen a lot of info regarding bullet weight not to mention some of the ammo being used is subsonic. Now I am asking for some info to clarify any confusion I may have. First I will be getting a 16" barrel from radical firearms and am not planning to use a suppressor on it at the time, maybe look into that later but for the mean time just swap out barrels and use to hunt hogs this summer until next season when I can use it hunt deer. Now, i am asking for any info you all can provide as to what ammo weight will be good for both deer and hog hunting and if subsonic ammo is to be used with the suppressor or without? I appreciate any info you can provide, Thanks.

I run my 300 blk out with 125 grain Hornady SST and 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. I have also used the Berger 115 grain HP. The 125 grain hunting bullets provide the best penetration with perfect mushroom shaped expansion. I have hunted the last 3-4 years with my blk out, and most everything I have shot has been DRT. I think it's a great Texas hunting caliber. On the subsonic, you CAN shoot them, but since you are shooting without a suppressor, I would not recommend it. The cycling of the subs needs a suppressor to help with the added back pressure. Without a suppressor, I'd stick to super sonic, full power ammo. Also, if you plan to run a suppressor and shoot subsonic ammo, shot placement it critical. Most common bullets will not expand, and will often get an "ice pick" wound- a .308" hole in and a .308" hole exit. This makes the bullet act like an arrow with a field point. For this reason, I'd recommend an expanding subsonic bullet.

If you go subsonic and stay under 100yds the 90gr xtp bullet over pistol powder is good medicine.
Non sub any of the barnes, sierra, or hornady 110-130 are hammers inside 200yds.

What barrel are you guys using?
I am planning on building my wife a 300 blk SBR for her to hunt with. I've dubbed this build "project wifle."

Meant to ask what length barrel you guys are guys are using for hunting?
I know some people say anything over 9in is just wasted barrel length but when I see their chrono numbers that doesn't seem to be the case.

I shoot a 10" on my SBR (w/can), and a 16.5" on my carbine. I like 125-130 grain on supers, and 208-220 subs. Mostly shoot my 240 grain lead projectiles.(Not as accurate as 208-220s but kills the hogs.) I have shot several 100s of rounds of Chad's ammo. Quality stuff!

Not that I have seen. Both give good expansion and penetrate well. Both shoot very well, also. I've taken more critters with the SST, but that was because I had those on hand, and was out of the BT at the time. Either shoot and perform equally well, IMO.
