Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Not sure. I haven't seen the gun in person and he's unsure. I doubt it though, look too white to be 40 year old ivory.

Some of the 1976-1982 SAA's had ivory grips, if it was kept inside a safe, it's possible that the grips would still look pristine. It's from the early 3 rd generation, most comparable pistols either have the box, different grips, are engraved or are in a different caliber. It will take consulting with someone that's familiar with the SAA market to be accurate. If he needs a ballpark figure, based on some pretty scarce comparisons, $1500 would be the floor with $1700 being about right.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

2100 to 2400 for the 2nd generation. If ivory is real +400. A little more if it letters with ivory.

This is one situation where a legitimate appraisal from someone who actually looks at the gun is much more useful than any number of opinions garnered from the internet.
If you are in or near a metro area, asking around will eventually scare up somebody who can accurately appraise all of those guns, thus saving your buddy untold expense and hassles. - Worth every penny.
Call around at the various gunshops, explain the situation, do not go with the first suggestion you get, keep looking and then decide.
It's like "antique Road Show", a lot of times the insignificant, junky-looking one will turn out to be the real diamond in the rough. - Only a legitimate appraisal will clue you in about things like that.

There's a guy that attends all the small local shows around here as a vendor (not sure he ever sells anything) that specializes in Colt SAAs but all his are old so he may not know as much about the new ones. I did not see him yesterday. I'll try to get a card next time I see him but it might be a while.
Pass the gravy.

3rd generation made in 1977 probably with simulated Colt Ivory grips. With no box or paper work around 1750 to 2000. Real Ivory grips you can add about 500.

You are correct... I was a couple years off on the generation. You can heat up a paper clip and apply it to the inside of the ivory. If it smells like hair it is ivory.
