It's been a little while since I posted on this forum. It's good to see that all y'all have been doing well. The boss lady and I had a pretty good year this year so I thought I'd post a few pics and share some stories.

The wife and I were able to hunt in Mason during mid November this year on her father's deer lease. On our way up there Friday night we almost hit one of the biggest hill country bucks I have ever seen. I was able to slam on my brakes and come within 10 feet of him before he bolted out of the way. Needless to say that the huge buck we almost ran over was a sign of good things to come. The weather was perfect (30-40 degrees) and the rut was in full swing. The deer heard was healthy and we were seeing a lot of does and young bucks. We quickly settled in, poured ourselves some bourbon and got ready for the morning hunt. Saturday was relatively uneventful, a lot of chasing going on but no real takers. Does were coming to corn and the bucks were following. I had never hunted the rut before so that in itself was quite a spectacle to see. I decided to change it up the following day. Sunday morning I sat in a little ground stand that looks like a porta potty. There isn't a feeder in the area, it's just a stand with a 360 degree view in an area with a lot of traffic. I got to stand early and waited for the sun to rise. Immediately I saw a couple of young bucks pass through the area and multiple groups of does. At one point there was a doe and fawn that came right up on me. The doe knew something was there and she kept stomping her foot and huffing out loud. The funny part about it was the fawn was mimicking her actions. I was entertained for a few minutes but after 20 minutes of her standing next to me and huffing I thought about taking her fat butt. She eventually moved on and I continued glassing the area. Two hours into my hunt I started to become a little bored. There was nothing of substance in the area and I thought about calling it a morning. I put my binocs down, my rifle down and I started to text my father in law. I sent him a text saying that I'd come get him in 20. As soon as I sent the text I got a little tingly sensation in the back of my neck. I jerked my head back 180 degrees and saw nothing but a big brown rack against the fence line. There was a big buck chasing some does right on the property fence line. I grabbed my rifle and swung around, I was at an awkward angle but I saw some does jump the fence onto a neighbors property. I thought to myself "man this guy is about to follow these does onto the neighbors property". Some of the does had jumped the fence but the one he was chasing had yet to cross. I lined up my cross hairs and followed him while he was in mid trot. He stopped for a split second and I decided to pull the trigger. BANG! perfect Texas heart shot. He ran back towards me about 20 yards and dropped dead in a small ditch. After I shot him I started shaking like a mad man. Everything happened so quickly that I didn't even have a chance to get buck fever. I think I had a case of post-shot buck fever. I waited thirty minutes and walked up on him. He was a beautiful Hill Country deer.

Wife's story: She and her mother were blabbing in a three person stand. About 60 minutes into the hunt a bad boy walked up to the feeder. She had to "ssshhh" her mother and she took the shot. The buck dropped right where it stood. She's a great shot! Her mother (who's not a hunter but enjoys being at the lease with her family) started "feeling sorry' for the deer. She called her dad and hauled the deer back to camp where she skinned and quartered it herself. I'm super proud of this lady, shes a natural born huntress.

All in all it was a great weekend. We both got wall hangers and we couldn't be happier. I feel really blessed to be able to partake such an age-old tradition. I have never felt more connected or at peace with myself as I do when I'm hunting. We're truly lucky to be able to engage in this sport in our great country.
