Starting to get interested in a New Mexico Public Muley hunt. I know pretty much nothing about it. Anyone who would like to share info feel free to PM or post here.

Best area?
Guide or not?
Time of year?
Costs?
Expectations?

Let's start with:

What size buck are you looking for?
How much do you want to spend?

That will give us a starting point.

Unit 2C. Good luck drawing. Unit 2B 3rd season would be second choice. But good luck drawing that one too.

160+

Just give me a price range and I'll decide If I want to spend that.

I think my top end would be 5k and that would take a lot if convincing for the wife

If it can be done without an outfitter it would obviously be cheaper but if I'm going I want to have the best chance I can for success. If I can get in a good unit I wouldn't mind doing it myself if I still had a good shot at getting the deer I'd be after.

Rule of thumb with any public land hunt is the harder it is to get a tag, and the farther away from everyone else you can go, gives you the size of the animals you can expect. New Mexico isn't considered a great Mule Deer state. They have some huge deer there, but the odds of getting a trophy quality buck are much better in other states.

Why New Mexico?

If you plan on spending 3-5k, just buy a LO voucher in Colorado and hunt a good unit. You can have a DIY hunt on public or the private the voucher is for and kill a 160 pretty easy

I was looking at NM just because I had heard that units 2 A, B and C produced some monsters but didn't know if those were the only good units.

I'm not against going to Colorado either. Tell me more about the landowner tags or point me in the right direction.

Where can I find data on where the best units are or can someone tell me which units to look at.

Thanks!
