Son in law wants a .22 semi for Christmas, budget is $200. Need suggestions on a reliable (dependent upon ammo) .22 semi. I have owned Ruger semi's but it has been quite a few years. Are any of the other current models a decent buy and not jam-o-matics? Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Marlin M60 comes to mind, and never had an issue with a Ruger 10-22. Both are solid rimfire's. I'd steer clear of the Mossberg's.

Marlin model 60, $169 for a black one. I prefer it to the 10-22 because of the tube magazine and it doesn't have an odd lever to hold/release the bolt.

I got my son the 10/22 two years ago. It's amazingly accurate and has yet to miss a beat. It's been great.

Flip a coin. Lots of mods available for the 10/22; I've killed a bunch of varmints with both.

Thanks for all the good advice. Found a 10/22 in the for sale section and will pick up a model 60 for myself.

I grew up with a Marlin, and it never let me down. However, we have a 10/22 for each member of the family and have never wanted for anything else.

I've owned several 10-22's and Marlin M60's.
I like the Marlin best.
Kind regards, charlesb

Can't go wrong with a Marlin 60...I have one...as do most of my friends.
If your SIL likes to tinker though, there are 1001 accessories one could buy for the Ruger 10/22.

I have owned or currently own multiple M60's and 10/22's, both excellent guns. However, I will throw another 22 out there, the Remington 597. I got one of these a couple of years ago and have been very impressed with accuracy and function. Have heard of others having issues with this rifle though.

Marlin 60, just keep it clean and buy an extra buffer because you'll need it in 10-15 yrs.
