Anyone ever have clearing done with one of those tree shears. I'm talking about the kind that attaches to a skid steer. It's like a giant pair of scissors that cuts near the base of the tree. I'm looking for info if anyone has ever had it done on their place or used it with success. Pictures of before/after would be helpful. Thanks.

If you get all the green off a cedar it will very likely die, so if you scissor one at the base it won't come back. We usually push ours with a tractor and FEL but as long as they aren't too big you should be good-to-go.

we had it done to our place about 10 - 12 years ago. I don't have pics, but it does great shearing the cedars off ground level. You can run tractors and ATV's over the places they cut. You will get young saplings sprout up the next few years, but those are much easier to trim down. We had roughly 50 acres cleared of cedars that way.

Bradco makes a nice one that does up to 10 inches.. if your doing a lot of land its about the quickest other than a dozer...

if your doing baby trees companies also make extractors but im not sure how great they would work in your area

also attachments called stump buckets that are a bit more cost efficient but you need one tough skid steer and still depends on the terrain..

What about the shredder that goes on the front of a skid steer? We used one at our last place in east Texas, it would grind a path about 6 foot wide, all the way to the ground. It would take out all the cedars and small pines no taller than 20 foot. Very very loud though

It all depends on what you are shearing. Cedars around here they are good. other trees the stump sprouts. Also what do you do with the trees you shear? Me, I am partial to dozing and piling then burning. Get it over with quickly.

My uncles dozed and sheared off about 200 acres, the shears left some hellacious stumps. Dozing pulled up some hellacious rocks.

Ranch I hunted on used this to shear off about 400 acres of mesquite. After cutting, the stumps were sprayed and 90% never came back.
This was 4 years ago and all of those areas are now plowed and planted.

For one person to do this with mesquite it's fairly labor intensive. You have to cut so much then go back and spray it within a certain time frame.

Yes I have a shear on a skid steer a lot. They work great. The ones I use can cut up to a 10" diameter tree. Which is a pretty dang big tree. Make sure you have a plan for where to put the cut trees. Just laying in the lane will make a mess that deer won't like.

Thanks. We bought one recently, rather my father did and I had no idea he was getting one. It's supposed to handle 10" diameter. Since we have two skid steers he also got a grapple for the other one. and a tank to put on top of one of them so that you can spray the stump after you have cut it. The shear he bought has nozzles that will spray the stump so you dont have to get off and get a spray tank or slow down too much with what your doing. We have a lot of mequite to clear on our place for some new shooting lanes and for some pasture for cattle.

The mesquite has to be sprayed withinn a couple minutes of being cut. It's sap will creat a bearer that won't let the herbicide be effective if you wait longer. Five minutes max.
I learned this the hard way, had a whole pasture come back because I cut first then went back and sprayed. All of it sprouted back the next year.
Good thing is you don't have to spray the cedar if you cut it off at the ground it won't grow back.

Cedar is not a problem in our area but good to know. Mesquite is the main target. I'm aware of the spraying on the stump and we have spray rigs for the stumps and for anything else like huisache and the pear. I'm hoping we can get them cut low enough that you can still drive over it with the ATV or tractor.
