I absolutely love to hunt when we have standing water on the ground. There are some sloughs, ditches, and drains in the pastures that I hunt. They should hold water for the dogs until well after Thanksgiving even if we don't get anymore rain. How are you guys looking in this area?

Does it help the dogs or help the birds hold? As a newbie, just curious of the benefits.

It's really great benefit to keeping the dogs cool. A friend ran his dog a couple of weeks ago and got it overheated. I now mostly hunt from a UTV and we keep water on there.

I hunted the first 20 or so years and never took any water with me. We managed to get the dogs to water someway.

Moisture helps with scenting. I also like having some water around. It helps keep dogs a bit cooler/wetter, not to mention providing a bit more drinking water. Birds will typically hold better during actual precipitation.

I love it when there is water in every low spot, keeps the dogs cool. Also, my favorite time to hunt is about 30 minutes after a half inch of rain just came down. Especially if there is about a 5-10 mph wind.

I have 4 ponds in the area where we do the hunts and I plant the birds from one pond to the next and the dogs love it, stay fresh and never want to stop.
