Went out this weekend and took a bunch of hogs with the Six8 and .308 but that story will come later this is about the first ever 12 gauge thermal kills!

First night out we were running into sounders full of 50-100 pound hogs with the rifles, so the plan was to load one slug and seven 00 buck shot. Of course the slug would be for the biggest sow and the buck shot was meant for the rest.

As luck would have it the very first hog we stumbled upon was a 320lb boar drinking in a stock pond. I was shooting down on him from the dam at about 40 yards so it did not even cross my mind he would run from a 12 gauge slug. The slug hit him center shoulder traveled all the way through and exited out his lower neck on the opposite side.

A lesser hog would have dropped right there in the water but not this guy he takes of running. So I start dumping the 00 buck into him with very little effect, two solid head and neck shots as he is running then a dud. Fortunately while I was racking the round out he was spinning in a circle. Just as I get back on target he runs straight back down the path where he came from taking three more 00 buck loads to knock him down.

Turns out the first shot was fatal but the buck shot did virtually nothing to this guy, he had some of the thickest shields I have seen. His sides felt like solid concrete the only buck shot to penetrate in enough to draw blood was a hit far back on his ribs. This was copper plated high velocity 00 buck.

Later in the night we took another large boar 290lbs he took a slug and a 120gr SST behind his shoulder at about 100 yards. He made it about 30 yards then collapsed dead.

I have seen the videos of guys knocking down hogs from helicopters all day long with buck shot, but this is the third big boar to take multiple hits not even slowing them down. So if you are hunting hogs with a shotgun I recommend at least a few slugs in case you run into one of these guys.

I'm so glad you shot that video but am more happy about the narration and lesson about shotguns and hogs.

I have some friends who need to see this!
Even a well placed slug just slowed him down...slightly.
The extra 00 just pissed him off.

Nice shooting..I have a 870 tac full of buckshot but have never thought I could get close enough so I have never used it for pigs. After deer season Im gonna sit in my bow blind with some slugs, that should be fun...

Is that a rifled barrel? Is a rifled barrel necessary for slugs? What barrel length? What type of slug? The main reason I have never used my gun for hogs is a 18" smooth bore barrel with no choke, seems like the pattern would be too wide for pigs at more than 25yrds give or take.

Another great instructional video TLM! Almost 40 years ago my cousin dusted a large boar 2X with 00buck broadside. It turned and ran directly at him, luckily he had a .357 and managed to drop the boar almost at his feet. We all started carrying sidearms after that incident.

God Bless

No its is a smooth bore with full choke. Was PMC MAX Brenneke slug 1oz going 1587fps at the muzzle. Was hitting a 6" steel plate all day long which is more than enough for hogs. After this guy I hit a 290 pound boar at 120 yards hit him low he ran about 40 yards then dropped, he tried to get up and took two 6.8 rounds from the other guys with me.

The buck shot was Federal flight control its designed to keep a tight pattern and was using full choke he took multiple pellet hits.

Nice Boar. Tough one for certain.

I agree…the slug wound is what proved fatal to the pig. Not surprising the buckshot (at that distance had little effect).

On smaller hogs the results would be better (using 00 buck) but even then….you have to consider that 40 yards is stretching it. Yes, the many pigs taken from helicopters with 00 buck or even 0 buck would have you think that buckshot is Thor’s Hammer, but those are mostly smaller pigs and many are shot in the spine from above.

If you want to knock the poopy out of large hogs, get some 3” Dixie Tri-Ball and leave the slugs at home. smile

00 buck is O.K. for small pigs, as you already know, but those who haven’t used it…consider this:

A 00 buck pellet is about .33 caliber and weighs roughly 54 grains. At 40 yards (even with high velocity loads) they churn up a fairly anemic 115 ft. lbs of energy (each pellet) and ‘deep’ penetration on hogs should not be expected.

Dixie Tri-Ball is three hardened .600” balls weighing 320 gr. each. At 40 yards each pellet will deliver almost 700 ft. lbs of energy. If you have an improved cylinder choke, you can expect a pattern of 10” at that distance. Full choke even better.

Of course, it’s not practical to use on hordes of hogs. You won’t find it on the shelf at Walmart or even your local gun shop. But for situations where you expect to encounter a large, tough hog as your first target, it is up to the task…I promise.

The ‘shield’ you allude to on that hog is fibrous tissue and on some hogs can be fairly tough and two or more inches thick. Here is an example from a boar I shot.

To make matters worse, unless you shoot a hog standing broadside (hide perpendicular to your line of sight) then the amount of ‘shield’ a projectile must penetrate… increases. The one inch squares below illustrate that difference.

Your hog was shot mostly broadside, but you don’t always get that luxury.

I only mention this….so everyone doesn’t go grab up their shotgun and buckshot to go hog hunting. I know YOU know the limitations, but a lot of folks don’t.

Great hog…. good job and nice shooting.

Yea flintnapper the original plan was to load slugs. But the first night hunting with the rifles we saw so many young sounders filled with 50 pounders I switched it up to the buck shot. Of course all the hogs we saw this night were large lone boars ha!

This is why I took the time and added the narrative at the end to keep people from choosing buckshot. Just in case anyone did not watch that far into the video I do not recommend buck shot unless you are shooting at very young hogs.

This was the second boar hit with the shotgun he was right at 120 yards I hit him low in the front leg breaking both of them he still ran 40 yards and collapsed. The guys hunting with him hit him with two 120gr SST's from the Six8's to make sure he stayed down. He was almost 290 pounds.

THANKS. I have a buckshot thread going but one problem is the only guys chiming in are the ones that have success stories. I've been trying to find out about buckshot failures as well. On a large hog it seems a slug is the only choice.

In March or April of 2008 I ran across a sow that was a good bit larger than that guy, by far the biggest pig I have even seen in the wild. I got after her with my AR and it took somewhere between 12-14 rounds and chasing her across a field on the four wheeler before she went down, she was not very fast but like the energizer bunny she just kept going. Covered over 200 yards from first shot to where she eventually fell, I do not think 00 would have even phased her. We had a John Deere 5425 at the time with a pallet fork attachment, we put a pallet on it and it took four of us to get her up on it. Her head hung off one side and her legs and butt hung off the other. I have never seen one close to that large either before or since.

Another great video. Fully professional now. up

I have never desired to use a shotgun on hogs and this illustrates why it is a less than optimal choice.

Keep up the good work. Really enjoy it! cheers
