What are your thoughts on this? I read it'll be out sometime next year.

http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/gun-shots/first-look-new-65-300-weatherby-magnum-cartridge

Initial factory load specs

127-grain Barnes LRX @ 3,531 fps
130-grain Swift Scirocco @ 3,475 fps
140-grain Swift A-Frame @ 3,395 fps

(I really just need some good talking points to use on my wife when I try to convince her that this rifle is a must have) rifle

Weatherby experimented with this several years ago! Good friend of my ordered it from one of those surplus warehouses out of shotgun news. We couldn't find a good load so we called Weatherby. The tech asked where did he get this? They worked with this round and said it was very inconsistent, and it worked best near compressed loads. Weatherby gave up on it and scrapped all of the actions/barrels. A few years later when Jim ended up with it, he was shooting the rifle and it blew up! Spitting wood and gasses all over him and the bolt froze in place. He was fine, wood splinters, etc.
Thank God, he always wears shooting glasses! Called Weatherby and told them what happened, it was his reloads, and he wanted to see if they could fix it(and how much it would cost) Jim shipped it to Weatherby, they got it apart, and told him THEY were sorry! If he would sign a release form, they would send him another rifle. He asked about getting the 6.5 back and they did ship it back also. He ended up with a 30-378 Lazer Mark and 4 boxes of shells.
On the release form also said he was not to do anything with that 6.5-300. But time has gone by and powder has changed so...

How times have changed. When I bought my 300 wby, in the owners manual, I believe it specifically saying you're not supposed to use hand loaded ammunition in it, and it would void any warranty if you did.

It will be close to a 26 Nosler. Plus, if you neck down 300 Wby brass, you will have to neck turn them. It can be done, but it would be a big over bore round.

That was stupid.

An educated hand loader can make ammo that is safer than anything mass produced. Of course that would cost Weatherby some money...

But an uneducated or careless reloader can turn a great functioning rifle into a pipe bomb.

My thought is too overbore for me to want to mess with and barrel life well under 1000 rounds.

The RUM was necked down to 6.5 RUM by one of the THF members a couple or so years ago. It was rebarreled t a different cartridge not long afterwards, not sure he ever fund a load for it.

Not saying I agree or support the no handload rule wby has, just stating they have it.

Mine has only fired 20 factory rounds, rest are handloaded.

I think most manufactures have a no reload clause in their warranty. Heck the Cooper came with the test target fired with reloads but the manual states reloads void warranty. So was the warranty void by the company using their loads, nope.

I like it, fast flat. What's not to like. It's speed and high bc will help.with ranging errors. but barrel life will be short. However as a hunting rifle it would last a long time if taken care of. Ammo price will make it a reloaders round.

A reloaders nightmare. Accurate barrel life probably below 800 rounds. Copper fouling. High initial costs of the rifle and components. Y'all can have 'em!!

X2
And when the barrel burns out and I've had my fun with it I could just rebarrel it to a 300 wby mag right?

Barrel life. I spoke to Frank at Bartlein about the 26 Nosler, who was supplying a lot of the test barrels for Nosler and some rifle mfg. He said they were getting around 400-500 rounds barrel life. And that was pushing it, he said. The barrels were toast before then, they just stretched them out. This 6.5/300 Wby is a little hotter than that. So, barrel life, maybe 400 rounds, if you shoot slow.

Wow! eek2 I was hoping for a little bit longer barrel life, somewhere around 1000 or so, the more I think about it, it seems like it might be a better idea to go with a 6.5-284, or a 260 rem.

Wow, 400 rounds, that's not much. Better hope load development is short!

Is its 100$ a box of ammo. So it's 5$ in ammo pull trigger pull. Plus another 2-3$ in barrel wear pull per trigger pull

I just wonder if you can get through barrel break-in before you'll have to change out the barrel? wink :P

I have a 264 WM. That's good enough.
