It happens. Rarely. More chance of being struck by lightning while sitting in the tree. Way more chance of being killed on the road driving to the hunting area.

then limit that to areas that only have bear.. the reasoning math is at flaw... I know because I made a 59.7 in math... that's a passing grade... winning

Sow with cubs is the wrong bear to be around.

Well apparently those odds aren't a great prediction of Bear attacks vs Lighting strikes in NM this year, for what ever reason. If hunting NM this year probably best to be a little extra careful, just a heads heads up to everyone hunting NM.

I don't find it odd if she was with cubs, they are pretty damn protective. I have two buddies that ran into a sow with cubs on a tight trail, she stood and snapped as the cubs ran, then she followed them. Buddie said she was small and young, probably why they didnt get an [censored] woop'n. A sow with cubs, or old toothless bears are the ones I worry about when I'm out by myself

"Stuff" happens, if you are out in the wilds, anything can happen. You can only be prepared for so many circumstances, it is the one you didn't anticipate that can or will hurt you. You can wear snake boots, but they are only a safety factor, it doesn't mean you will be standing up when a snake strikes you in the butt.

According to the updated NOAA stats, 24 people have been struck and killed by lightning in 2015 so far, not that facts always matter

2 people killed this year in NM from lightning. Having a bear tag is cool, but wont help if it is a sow with cubs (lactating)

BTW, 2 years ago when I killed my elk, the plan was to sit on the gut pile and bear hunt (had a tag), I slept in and when going up for the afternoon hunt, the pile had been eaten and was drug about 30 yards, bear tracks everywhere
