Guy at work told me his pasture is covered in birds, told me I could come out and hunt it. I say "hell yea".
He told me that he feeds his cattle alot of grain, that made me ask is that legal to hunt over. Had 2 people tell me yes it is.
What say the THF? Is that not considered hunting over a baited field? Do I need to hunt a certain distance away from said grain?

NOTE: Hunters are responsible for knowing whether an area is baited or not.

The following baiting rules have been established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service:

A hunter may hunt any migratory game bird:
•over standing crops, standing flooded crops and flooded harvested crops
•at any time over natural vegetation that has been manipulated. Natural vegetation does not include planted millet. However, planted millet that grows on its own in subsequent years after the planting is considered natural vegetation
•on or over a normal soil stabilization practice
•on or over lands or areas where seeds or grains have been scattered solely as a result of a normal agricultural practice except waterfowl and cranes may not be hunted where grain or other feed has been distributed or scattered as the result of:
•pre-harvest manipulation of an agricultural crop; or
•livestock feeding;

As long as I'm not hunting ducks or crane I'm fine.
Just wonder how the GW would know it's the LO standard agricultural practice. I don't raise cattle, so don't really know anything about it.

Feeding cattle is standard agriculture practices nidea
You can test the waters so to speak, when you enter the field, the cattle should come running to the area they are being fed grains.
And besure the cattle are still there when or if the wardens show up.not in another area someplace down the road bang

While I know it says your responsible for knowing, call game warden and ask. You don't need to tell them what property you'll be on, just ask if it's considered baiting and if he encountered it would he wrote a ticket

I know that lol, just the grain feeding part. I hunt in 2 other pastures and they just graze and eat hay. Could be wrong but don't think hay is considered grain. But like I said, don't know squat about the raising of cattle.

Why not ask the GW for that area to meet you and check it out before you hunt?

Its going to be the GW interpretation on if its legal or not.

GW doesnt get the finial say, the judge does, and the law seems to be pretty spelled out to me

it states right in the regs that you can hunt anything except ducks and cranes over an area where cattle are being fed

you don't have to be Matlock to decipher this stuff

How did I know the remington hater would chime in? grin

You would love my next topic to be, "got cited for hunting baited field" wouldn't ya?

Man said he hasn't had GW on his property ever and don't care to have one on his property, so asking a GW come check it out is not an option. He says he grains year round.

May also depend on the warden. Asked one about hunting our property, 320 acres with 4 corn deer feeders. From the distances he said we would have to stay away from the feeders you wouldn't be able to dove hunt on our property.

well, you are feeding deer. He asked about hunting where they are feeding cows. It's not open to interpretation guys. Hunting dove is legal where livestock is fed.

Well didn't hunt there this evening, had mixed feelings about it. May be a cool, great place to hunt, not wanting to chance it.
Got 5 in another spot closer to work. Not great but it's a no ticket item.

I would like to know where some of yall come up with thoughts like "its up to the warden" or even better "the warden ultimately has the final say" Its not for them to decide if something is or should be illegal. It either is or it is not. Can they write you a ticket? yes Does that mean that you are going to have to pay it? absolutely not The baiting rules are very clear, and even easier to understand if you pull up the full 2 pages from the fws site.

Appreciate the wisdom and feedback sir. But not everything is cut and dry as seems.
