You looking for a truck gun, a carry and then shoot once rifle, or a specific animal gun? If you want one to abuse, buy a couple Mossbergs for that price. If your going to carry it, the Tikka T3 lite will fit the bill, but it will have a little recoil due to the light weight.

Tough to beat a Remington 700. So many available options that allow youu to upgrade the gun as you want when you want.

Gotta agree with the crowd and go Tikka, although I got my son a Marlin X7 for $239 that shoots really well for a rifle that price.

Does that budget include scope? What are you wanting to do with it?
If it's for hunting and your budget includes scope, look at the Savage model 10 or 11 or Trophy Hunter XP if you want to save a few bucks. Tikka for $550 plus a $300 scope isn't a bad option either. I got a Savage 308 varmint/heavy barrel for about $450 and it easily shoots half MOA, but it's not a great hunting rig due to the weight.
If it's for hunting and your budget doesn't include scope, the Tikka mentioned above is probably your best bet. I would get a stainless/synthetic, forest, hunter, or hunter stainless model for your budget. The forest model is a really sexy rifle IMHO.

If you don't mind toting a heavy rig my Savage 10FCP with 5R rifling had treated me very well. I have a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 scope mounted with EGW 20MOA base and Seekins rings.

I love Remington but too many recalls. Go with the Tikka. I have my eyes on one in 7mm/08
