I see a lot of guys getting worked up over raccoons. My dad can't stand it that raccoons are eating the corn. He plans out these elaborate schemes to try and exterminate the corn thieves. We have never once had a coon ruin a feeder. What is the obsession with getting rid of raccoons? If I had a big buck coming to feeder I sure as heck wouldn't be staking it out at night running him off to kill some darn raccoons. If you want big, old, smart bucks to stick around leave the place alone. I only get within 100 yards of my feeder when it's time to fill it up. It only gets filled in the middle of the day or right after getting out of the stand. Same feeder. Buddy took this monster with his bow.

I agree, great bucks. But to be sure, coons do damage some feeders, and in a lot of places they consume a lot of corn. I'll also admit that the best time to thin the coons out is during the off-season, but right after the deer season in particular. Most importantly to me, coons tear up a lot of turkey and quail nests and eat a lot of eggs. On my place, varmints like that (possums, skunks, porkys, badgers, bobcats, yotes, etc.) better watch their six.

I have a Duke Trap tied at the water trough, to the leg of a protein feeder and corn feeder year round. I catch coons all the time. I have the same bucks in my feed pens and at water. My scent is around my feeders all the time from checking feeders, to filling feeders, to killing coons in traps to putting out trail cameras. I want any deer that comes around to be familiar with my scent.

I've heard tell of a magic potion that makes coons disappear, I believe it was Golden Malrin and just about any soda.

I use Z-Traps (just like Dukes but with a 2-way trigger) and I caught a B&C coon one morning at one of my feeders. .22 to the nugget and done. Then I walk on to the other stand I was hunting that morning about another 500 yards away. Trail cam pics show that not five minutes after I left that feeder a very nice 8-point that I had been watching came up and camped out under the feeder. In fact, my buddy in Kansas bumps deer off his feeders all the time when his filling them. He watches them bounce 50 or 60 yards away and he fills the feeder. Then as he drives off, he watches them make their way back to the feeder.

I'm afraid were I was hunting though (small 100 acres) it would drive them out. I think each area probably has it's own set of rules or tactics that work best. I used to trap varmints from January-March. You could really see the difference in the quail population. I took 20-30 skunks off a little 100 acres in the hill country one spring. We went from never seeing quail to having a couple dozen butter balls under the feeders.

Deer can get accustomed to almost anything being part of their environment, traps and humans included. If there is corn there, they don't care if a big barrel is hanging over their head that is held up by 3 (or 4) legs, and even anchored with t-post, with a camera, and a fence around it. A DP trap ain't hurting a thing. I watch deer at the feeder with with a coon thrashing around on the end of a trap all of the time.

We don't hunt feeders so coons aren't a problem, but seeing some of the pictures on here I fully understand why they get whacked. I'd be seething if a family of 4-5 came rolling in after my feeder went off and cleaned up a buck or two worth of corn every day.

We would hunt the feeders during September on a lease in Llano County. Good practice to take a coon with a 22 or 22 Mag from 100 yards. Most of the guys wouldn't sit their stands, just find a spot they could see and plunk 'em. The last couple of years the hides got to be worth around $5-10 so we'd pop them after the season in January and drop them off at the fur buyer.

I've had one all summer that's been able to reach through the varmint cage and spin the plate for all 12 of his buddies. Keep wondering why my feeder has been emptying so quick lately and put the camera back up and found out why. I coated the feeder legs with vasoline real good and he hasn't been able to climb back up yet.

I am no expert, but this might help. Get a cheap protein block from Wal-Mart. Some Molassias. Or Stump-licker. Couple cans of cheap Clam-Chowder. Walk off about 100 yards from your feeder. Best if you can find TALL-TREES. Of any kind. Wedge that block of protein high as you can, in the top fork. Pour them cheap cans of Clam Chowder onto it. Then pour Moliassa. Or, Stump Licker all in the top of the tree down to the ground. Them Coon's. Will worry themself's to death over that set-up. And forget about the corn. Just my Redneck, experience on the matter. Good-Luck.

I've trapped and shot 6 coons in the last 3 days at my "homeplace" feeder. I have coon cuff traps staked in the ground within 20 yards of feeder. All my bachelor herd bucks on cam before coon in trap, while coon in trap and at the next feed throw after I've shot and killed the trapped coons. Smart deer know "normal" ranch activities and hunting activity. I am surrounded by "Cooters" that shoot/poach everything they can so I don't think I am an anomaly with uneducated, smart old bucks. Just my experience.

I think trapping in the spring and early summer is ok. I still think that on small acreage you are going to be spooking big bucks off your place. Traps should be checked everyday. I can guarantee you that if I were to be messing around with my feeders everyday those mature bucks are going to be finding their food elsewhere. My friend that I leased this 100 acres with took a 145-160 class buck every year for 5 years in a row. I attribute that to low pressure. I unfortunately only got to hunt it one year. How many of you guys see this on a 100 acre low fence lease in Texas? Again I attribute it to low pressure.

Doesn't need to be an everyday thing. When my coon population builds to the point that they are costing me mucho feed, I hit them hard with Duke traps. Run the feeder line every day for a week or ten days. Catch a bunch but the rest get wise and move on. Usually solves the problem for a few months.
