Ever held one? Bad materials, bad quality assurance.

Never have. Ever. Just looking to buy my first handgun for me and possibly my wife.

Buy something better. A rock island, xd, m&p, Glock will be much better.

Sloppy machining is the most common issue in my experience with "cheap" firearms that are new. Sure, the materials are likely substandard but misalignment and slop is a lot more "right now" than crappy materials.

Those are better choices IMO.

If you're looking at HiPiint because it's cheap, you can spring a little more $$ and get a Smith-Wesson SD9V. Much better materials and machining.

SCCY are a good starter gun, stay away from the Hipoints, and the Jimnez (?) can't spell. They offer a warranty with those AND you WILL need it! I will not sell/stock the Hipoints and Jimnez, warranty or not!

The High point doesn't have sloppy machining. It isn't machined at all, it's cast from pot meatal. That's why it's so cheap.

High points are big, ugly, only hold about 9 and inexpensive.
Ya can pretty much always sell them for what ya paid plus the ones I've had went bang every time but I'm not a range guy.

That being said you will probably be happier with something else.

Saw one on FB today in 45 sell for 250.00. I think the guy paid 100.00 to much.

Look at Jiminez and Phoenix arms as well.

I bought a High Point as my first pistol and regretted it. It had constant feeding and ejection problems. Also its very heavy for a single stack gun in its class. Sold it and bought a Springfield XD.

I have a cf 380 hi point...for home protection ...its better than nothing....it ALWAYS goes bang...its a brick...but if its what you can afford....you wont be dsappointed.

I have a HiPoint 9mm and 45, have never had a fail to feed and they are accurate. They are ugly but if you are on a budget they are good guns. I bought the HiPoint because I wanted to form my own opinion. I am very happy with mine.

Geez, you spent your own money to buy one in order to form your own opinion? You should gave just sat at the local gunshop and listened to everyone who has never owned a Hipoint to give you their experience. "I held one and could tell it would not be any good." Or "Nothing that inexpensive can work". Another favorite "My idiot BiL wasted his money on one of those. Can't be any good because he is an idiot!"

Hopefully you realize I jest. I did similar thing with one of the Hipoint carbines. Bought one and was pleasantly surprised, haven't had any trouble and it serves its intended purpose.

Love earlier comment about warranty and how an owner would need it. Thought that was the selling feature of the Vortex scopes.

My past experience with a High point was cheaply made and very accurate.

It is what it is...its a pistol ..goes bang ...pretty accurate...not an heirloom...if you dont like it your not out 3-600.00 $...personally..i like mine....dont care much what anyone else thinks.

Why not get a well proven CZ clone from Tristar for just a bit more? I carry a C-100 daily with a 15 round capacity that was only $300ish from Academy. I actually prefer it over my Sigs that cost a lot more. Bottom line; I trust mine and my families life with them and own 3. I don't think there is a better value in accurate and military proven pistols on the market.

Another problem with the cheap ones is that if you don't like them no one will take them off your hands so make sure you pick the right caliber, grip angle and size, features, etc.

Thought about buying used?

The June 2015 issue of American Rifleman has a writeup on the Hi Point company. They got compared to Ruger when they first started out. I haven't owned a HiPoint, so can't comment. Though their carbines do look interesting, and someday may end up with one.

I like mine. Keep it at the ranch in case I forget my EDC. The selling point for me came from a dealer at a gun show. He said "Would you rather throw a $500 pistol out of your window or a $150 pistol."
