Went out there this weekend with Pitchfork Predator and had a great time as usual. Met Ben & Bob (sounds like ice cream) cool dudes with great stories Saw a lot of quail busting around us, weird thing was we kept seeing singles running down the road in front of us, would not fly off just kept trucking then ducking in the cover. Jack Rabbits all over the road, dang things would run in front of the Polaris for for up to 300 or 400 hundred yards, it was pretty cool to watch.

Little late but sunrise This was wild, thought we saw a huge rub on a cedar then noticed a dead coyote behind it, wonder what the heck happened? And we did a lot of hiking, heck of a nice weekend. Pitch on the ledge.

Beautiful Country. Nice pictures. Thanks Saw a lot of quail busting around us, weird thing was we kept seeing singles running down the road in front of us, would not fly off just kept trucking then ducking in the cover. I would bet that Mr. Bob was drawing you away, and distracting you from his nesting hen. I have seen them (hens) act like they are wounded or have a broken wing and try to draw you away from nest.

I bet your right, happened at least 4 or 5 times while driving around.

Myself and two buds hunted the Pitch around 2011 or so. From the pics it looks like tha same pastures possibly. The year we hunted, a fire had consumed half the lease during the summer prior to deer season. My group didn't kill a buck that year but we saw a bruiser one day and viewed him with nocs and through a scope. Had he not been on another mans feeder he'd be on a wall right now. We only left as the drive was too much for us, six hours one way and we like to be in the woods frequently in deer season. We knew the potential for very good deer was there but the drought was bad during our tenure on the place. The vistas were spectacular and I have many fine pics from roaming that place. There were tons of pigs and in fact I have a pic of the largest hog I've ever seen captured on game cam, we named him Beetle cuz he looke like a VW Bug. We never saw him except for the one pic on the game cam. The Pitch was when I got my first electronic game caller. We had more fun calling coyotes than any hunting I've ever done except for possibly pushing hogs in deep ravines of the Frio river with one walker and posted hunters up ahead waiting on them to run by. And it was at camp on the Pitch I had an experience I'll never forget. A tug of war over a doe, me on one end, a bobcat on the other. He was determined but so was I. Great ranch, and the other hunters we shared the lease with were great folks as well. I wish I still had my spot even it was a long drive.

I remember you guys! That buck you saw was at my Bell feeder. I still owe you a "thank you" for not shooting him. I see from the other thread you guys are busting a group of poachers. I wish you great luck in successfully sending those bastards to jail. I'm going to try to have a group hog/coyote hunt this summer. I'll pm you and hopefully you can make it back up and help us kill some hogs and coyotes.

It is a beautiful place, Pink. I'm very fortunate to be able to go out there with my friends. Just a great time everytime we're out there. Heck, even getting stuck in the mud 6 miles from camp is OK. Just climb a hill and you can USUALLY get phone service. Just don't forget the cooler with extra snacks, water and adult beverages.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

This was wild, thought we saw a huge rub on a cedar then noticed a dead coyote behind it, wonder what the heck happened? On a very dry year I have seen Jack Rabbits eat the bark off of the bottom of Mesquite trees, and they love the mesquite beans. I have never seen them eat the bark off of Cedar trees. But I would bet they will and that is what you see. And the deer love the cactus bud and the fuzzy needle don't bother them. They also make great jam and jelly.

A coyote was caught on a trap with a drag and got tangled up in the tree. All the trees my coon traps are on, look just like this.

That makes perfect sense, coons I have trapped in a Dukes trap have done the same thing and that thought crossed my mind. Problem was, I looked at the legs and ankle and did not see any trauma to them, might have missed it? Also what made me think of the possibility of an Alien encounter was how high up the bark was stripped, even tiny limbs

Sometimes you just get them by the toes. Traps don't always get them higher up on the leg, but they hold one closed. The chain on the trap/drag gets tangled and wrapped around stuff as he tries to get out. Glad you guy's had fun!

Bolt I guarantee your right, the base of the tree is all torn where that Yote was fighting like Hades to get out. I was hoping to get an alien conspiracy theory going

It was a the best buck we'd seen, did see the entire time we were on the lease. Did anyone ever get him? I recall a blind was moved to the hill adjacent to the hill that feeder was on. Please do PM me. I'd like to get back on the lease if a spot opens up. One of the other men in our group might want to get on also. The third member bought property 9 or 10 miles SE of Taylor. We've been developing the deer herd out there, talking to neighbors to discourage killing baby bucks, put in a great food plot, wiping out pigs, and now working on a poacher group which has been operating for decades. It's close and convenient. But it lacks the complete wilderness experience I enjoyed at the Pitch. It's truly a unique piece of Texas.

Great pics and BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY... Looks great. I'm a northern boy at heart but I can certainly see the appeal of country like that.
