Not familiar with this combination, but I came across a NIB Ruger American Predator with 16" barrel, tan stock for $395. Could take it home now. Checked Buds and might save a little but less than 5%. Would this be a good rifle for tractor and truck, would not be shooting over 150 yds because of terrain and brush. Would appreciate opinions on this caliber/rifle/price. Would be using it for everything from rabbits to hogs. Have done a tad reloading for other calibers. Thanks.

I'm not a fan of the caliber, but that seems like a good price for the rifle.

Unless you're going to make it silent I would pick another. I hate the fact it drops like a rock in case you came along that hog out there about 300 plus.

Unless you're going to make it silent I would pick another. Those were hard to come by for a while but the prices are coming down. I agree that if you're not going to suppress it that you'd be better off with something stouter.

Appreciate the comments, but this particular land this gun will be assigned to doesn't have any areas past 200 yds that you can see clearly. I have a few heavier calibers, 300 WM, 30-06, 308, but they are not the type that I want rattling around on the tractor while I'm stirring up dust with the brushhog. I have been using an old Win 94 but my eyes are getting weaker, hence the thought of something to put a 4-6 fixed power scope on. I also like the idea of the 16" barrel, darn sure am not cutting the barrels on either of my 300 WM to 16". I am usually wearing ear muffs while mowing but that is still a quick way to lose hearing-I might forget the muffs are not on my head. Once aagain, thanks for any and all comments or suggestions.

I have one and like it. Don't have plans, at this time, to suppress it, but that may change. Accuracy is not bad and it is fun to shoot.

Interesting. I have 3, 300 Blk Out rifles (1 AR, and 2 bolt guns), and it has been my main caliber for the last 2 years now. I've taken everything with them, suppressed and unsuppressed. For a simple rifle with a 16" barrel, it is an ideal rifle and caliber for basic hunting. Everything but 2 animals have dropped in their tracks with it. 1 pig was shot on the run from about 75 yards, and was hit behind the shoulder a little back, and ran about 50 yards. The other was a small buck than ran about 10-15 feet and fell. Everything else dropped. I have run the 125 grain bullets mainly, and some with the 115 Berger. I will still keep and use the 300 blk out as my main rifle when stand hunting inside of 150 yards. I think it's a great round without using the big magnum rounds that are generally over kill for Texas. I wanted a simple and effective round without the huge recoil (for me and my son to shoot), and the 300 blk out is the round for me.

That's a good price. I have a 300 Blk and have taken quite a few pigs and a couple of coyotes with it. I have also lost a few pigs with it. Yes, it was shot placement. Since I hunt at night and it seems a little more difficult to make the perfect shot I bought an AR10 to use instead. A little more oomph in the case of an errant shot.
The 300 will be the backup for nighttime use.
Not trying to talk you out of buying one. I like mine and will keep it. Just be cognizant that it is on the lower end when it comes down to stopping power. Shot placement will be the key.

I think it will be a great caliber with your intended purpose and planned optics. If you reload, it may become one of your favorite rounds.

My main argument against your caliber choice was your mention of 'truck/tractor'. Having more oomph on shots taken in fast situations can help make up for the increased possibility of marginal shot placement. You could get the green-stocked Predator in .308 (18" threaded barrel) and not have another caliber to track; also, the compact model is available in .243, 7mm-08, or .308 (all 18") and you could thread the barrel if you need it so. Or if you really like that one you can buy it and enjoy! $395 isn't a bad deal. I have a standard model in 7mm-08 and really like it.

I love my Blackout. I've killed 1 deer and 3 hogs and shot steel at 300 yards with it. It has almost no recoil so my son loves to shoot it too. Perfect truck gun if you ask me.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

I bought one already had to send it back to ruger would shoot Gemtech subsinic ammo great but it would light strike hornady ammo every time you could recock it and it would shoot the second time. Sent it back to ruger and they reworked the chamber. Haven't shot it again yet.

I love the 300 bo for its intended purpose. I was torn between this and the acc handi rifle in 300 bo. I went with the handi rifle. Its scary accurate and quiet with a 90gr xtp over green dot at 50-100yds. Its also about half the price. Plus it breaks down quite nicely. I have a burris 2-7×32 on it. Its threaded and has pic rail std.all total i have about 325 in it.

There are much better choices for your intended purpose. Yes, a .300 BO will kill a hog, but that doesn't mean it is the proper choice for the job. I've killed pigs with a .22, but I wouldn't choose one as a dedicated hunting rifle for medium sized game. There are many light recoiling rounds with far superior ballistics and terminal performance when compared to the BO.
The .300 BO (first called .300 Whisper before AAC decided to revamp the marketing on an old round) is designed to be shot suppressed and/or through short barrels where efficient powder consumption is a value. Shooting a BO through a 16" barrel without a can is simply handicapping yourself performance-wise with no real benefit over a caliber with more range and punch.

I appreciate all the advice and insight into this caliber and gun, still considering a few options. Someone suggested buying an upper for my AR?

That's what I did but it was almost double the asking price of the rifle mentioned.

You can buy a complete 300 BO upper for the same price or even less. Check out Radical Firearms, I have bought 5 of their uppers and have been very satisfied. They are running amazing sales right now! http://www.radicalfirearms.com/AR-15-Complete-Uppers-s/1825.htm
